I would like to know how come 100% Permanent Disabled Veterans with the brown uniformed services ID like a dependents, are not allowed to fly Space A. All of us served on Active Duty and in my case, I became 100% Permanent Disabled cause of Desert Storm. My ID shows my rank when I was discharged and shows "Self" under relationship to sponsor. Anyone have any infrmation about it please let me know. Post here or email me at ricocasanova@aol.com
That is a very good question. Additionally, the rules were changer and now dependents are authorized to travel in CONUS w/their sponsors (Active Duty and Retired) however, reservists & grey area retirees are specifically prohibited from this benefit.
Not only are dependents "authorized", but so are DOD civilians, Cub Scouts, Civil Air Patrol, and many others... We get hurt on active duty and are now disabled, but we can't fly Space "A"? Hardly makes any sense.
we need to know if there is a military base someplace close to savannah tenn. that we can fly into from travis air force base in northern californai. thanks for your help. sincerely, sue warfield
Despite rumors to the contrary, 100 percent disabled veterans in possession of DD form 1173 or 2765 identification cards are not entitled to space-a travel aboard DoD aircraft. Any changes to space-a eligibility rules will be published as an immediate change to DoD 4515.13r and advertised accordingly (Reiteration HQ AMC/DONP 091704z Mar 99 and Reference PASSENGER SERVICE UPDATE DTG: 261800Z OCT 01 para 1.H).
Jeffcange,
You said "Reservists & grey area retirees are specifically prohibited from this benefit." That is not correct. The two groups you mentioned can utilise Space-A with guidelines - ref http://www.spacea.info/faq.html#Reservist
jjurgy,
You are correct when you state dependents "authorized" Space-A but you are misleading when you imply that Cub Scouts, Civil Air Patrol, and many others... can use the space-a benefit. The groups you mentioned are not authorised Space-A according to the reg Table 6.1. They are authorised travel in certain situations on DoD aircraft but NOT in a space-a status.
My husband is 100% total and permanent due to Vietnam war. We are just now finding out that we can enjoy some of the discounts offered. However, I can't find anything out about flight discounts. Can anyone help?

i am also a 100% service connected disabled veteran. i have been writing to various senators and congressmen, along with the chairman of the joint cheif of staff about space a travel for disabled veterans.
the good senator from hawaii has introduced legislations to change usc title 10 to allow any service connected disabled veteran to travel space a. he has done this since 2000, and the bill always ends up in the armed services committee, never to see the light of day.
the regulation that they use to allow retirees use of space a travel says "this is ment to allow a respite from the rigors of military service" perhaps they think that the rigors of military service that caused us to loose our health does not warrent allowing us some respite.
i have also written the comanding generals of each branch to pose the question about space a travel for disabled veterans, but they say taht they are bound by the regualtions.
i have even e-mailed the president, vice president, speaker of the house, ect. will keep you posted on any word...
I keep up with Congressional bills and noticed recently that Congress had approved, in the last month or two, a Space A allowance for Veteran's. As I got about enough travel in the the Military, I did not pay due attention to this bill, as I had other matters at hand which I was concentrating on with which to inform my Congressman. I also was unaware of this particular forum...Sorry!
Does anyone know what the ultimate outcome of that bill was, i.e., (is) it for Veterans, 30%+ Vets. or the totally disabled. Thanks.
space a travel is allowed on coast guard air craft for 100 percent dis vets,,bill s 58 is still in the armed services committee for review,,what is interesting is that according to dod 4515.13-r c1.3.7 this allows retirees who are 100 percent disabled to fly on dod aircraft but, when you ask dod about letting 100 percent dav fly they say it would be to much of a burden to allow people with 100 percent disabilties to fly,,i know because i asked them
ok, where can you find coast guard aircraft terminals? I am 100% disabled and would really like to find out how i can fly. Any info would really help. Thank you!! Email me at talachner@alltel.net
I checked the site you quoted but where do you go from the site? I have clicked through to several places and found nothing.
Thanks
I also agree with the start of this string. If one is 100% disabled vet they have given as much as a 20 year man/woman has because they are living with the problem for life, they take it with them whereever they go. The reminder is there every day. It is so much bullshit that the Govt has specifically excluded disabled vets from space a. The disabled ought to be first in line. A category above all others except active duty and the injured and their families. Why should some kid in the ROTC or Boy Scouts travel when those that gave of their bodies and soul for their countrynot get a ride at all! Our Military leaders have it wrong. They have their rank on the backs of those they put in harms way and they do not want to see the injurred and disabled. Out of sight out of mind. They need to crawl on their knees to the disabled for their lofty position. Congress needs to recognize this and override the nonsensitive, prejudice people on the Committee that prevent the disabled the right to fly on space a flights. Now the system is a farce to those that have served.
If you are referring to the USCG link then from there you would find out which USCG units have aircraft and from that you determine where the USCG opportunnities are.
As for the rest of your post, I want to clarify a few things:
1. The Govt has NOT specifically excluded disabled vets from Space-A travel on military aircraft; only those deemed 100% disabled are not authorised.
2. Boy Scouts are not authorised to "Space-A" travel on military aircraft. If they are then please provide the reference to the regulation that authorizes this.
