Good news: Only about 1% to 2% of all security clearance applications are denied.

Bad news: Of those that are denied, almost half are for financial problems.

Before you go to a bankruptcy attorney, see a credit counselor, preferably one that is a member of the National Foundation for Credit Counseling, such as Credit Counseling Services of America. They will be able to tell you if bankruptcy is a reasonable option or whether there are better options than bankruptcy.

Whatever you decide, get to work on it right away and keep good records, including a chronological record of everything you do to resolve your problem.

To understand the impact of bad debt on a security clearance, read the Adjudicative Guidelines for Determining Eligibility for Access to Classified Information--specifically Guideline F: Financial Considerations. You can find a copy of the Guidelines at http://lastpostpublishing.com/resources.aspx

Good luck

Thank you for posting that link! That's the best gouge I've seen on the subject.

encartman1965- Read item 20 under Section F of those guidelines. As long as you have a good reason and can show reasonable and resposible behavior for correcting the issue you should be good to go.

I want to stress again that Consumer Credit Counseling is worse than a Chapter 13 Bankruptcy. You have NONE of the legal protections in CCCS that you have in Bankruptcy.

thanks for the reply,,i have called some of my creditors to tell them of the problems i m having, see the thing is i discoverd this hernia during my AT training and since that time(6 weeks) i haven't recieved much pay,i have to still pay for my insurance thru my work(400 a month),in which i m behind about 2 weeks been using like 2 days a week to pay for that except for the last 2 weeks because HR at my work has been gone,so what do i do to show i m trying to get out debt, see cccs or bankrupcy lawyer which i don t want to do,but if i don t get some money soon,i m gonna be forced to do something, after surgery i will have been off work for 10 weeks with no pay, wife works but not enough, when i get out of this i will no longer count on 2 incomes,,,and a lot of people do,i would recommend that to all out there dont count on 2 incomes and have about 2 months savings because things happen, which is out your control.. thanks
