couple of questions, i am in the process of trying to rejoin the military. How can I repair my credit? Would filing bankruptcy affect me rejoining, I don't need a security clearance. What types of debt does bankruptcy get rid of?

The are two forms personal of bankruptcy. Chapter 7 and 13. They are named for the chapters of the code that describe them. Recent changes to the law make it much harder to file chapter 7.
They do not get rid of tax bills, student loans and other obligations to the government. They can get rid of credit card debt, car loans, etc. Under chapter 13 you set a payment schedule to pay off your bills - part or all. You get a break in past late fees and interest and reduced interest rates. The US Courts have a web site with more information than I ever knew about chapter 13. It is here Chapter 13 US Courts And here is chapter 7 US Courts Chapter 7 You repair your credit by paying your bills. Bankruptcy is a 7 year blotch on your credit. You might consider a Credit Counseling Service. The best are part of the NFCC that has a site here: NFCC Credit Counseling Services. They have a member organization locater on the page. http://www.debtadvice.org/takethefirststep/locator.html |
