Today, I was served a summons for a debt that I don't even recall. I don't have the means to pay it and have no idea how to proceed. Is the military able to give me any advice? Thank you!

I would take it to legal. They might not be able to represent you but they can send you in the best direction.

Can you please tell me how to contact them? I've been all over google, and I can't find any information. I found one website (I don't remember what it was, I'm not at home right now) that was supposed to have a locater, but everytime I put in my location, instead of getting locations of the legal offices, I kept getting an error message. I'm scared to death and want to get this taken care of asap. Thank you so much!

Are you currently deployed? I would contact your base Legal or JAG office.

I'm sorry..I should have probably clarified..I'm not in the military; my husband is. He's actually still in tech school (he's been there a long time. It's a long class), so he doesn't really know who to tell me to get in touch with.

If you don't recall the debt--either for yourself or your husband--contact the credit bureau's ASAP to see about ID theft.

Contact legal where you're at on post/base. JAG would be the name.

I don't currently live on base...Can I just call the closest base? It's only about an hour away. Maybe they could assist me?

The first thing to do is contact the attorney representing the debt. Get the debt info specific..name of debtor..who is owed..and dates.etc--give no info except your name... Make no agreement to pay under any circumstances. Oh, verify info with your husband..if served in both names. Last but not least contact your local legal aid office..if the VA etc can't help..

Good luck-cPg

The VA does not provide legal assistance. If AD, then the legal office on base may be able to help.
