I'm hoping someone here could tell me what this is. I am technician on a local bomb squad and we were called to handle this. All we know about it is the person who had it was in the army in the mid 60's. He could not identify it for us, but knew it was from his time in the military. The item was made out of metal and appeared to have a possible pull ring taped down on the side (slightly visible under the brown tape). The stuff on the top looked like small pieces of rope that were taped down. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yup. It was about 4 or 5 inches in diameter. Thanks for the input.
