They debate that no one is ever going to win, which one is better? To me there is somethings, I like more about CFB then the NFL and vice versa.
In college football I like the fact that a pass interference is not going to gain you 55yds. The NFL really needs to change that rule.
In the NFL you have the playoff system that works out everytime. No one can complain about who won the super bowl. CFB you have the BCS and every year people are complaining about who plays in the national championship game.
I also like the overtime factor in CFB more. The only thing i wish they would do is put it back to the 35 or the 50.
I have found myself watching much more college football this year than NFL play. I should also mention that I live in the horrible south Florida market so I get all the terrible Miami Dolphins games and for some reason all the NFC East games (nearly as bad excitement-wise). There's just alot more going on in college football where you have 119 teams. Alot of different storylines and interesting matchups. I like the pageantry of college football and the rich history.
That said, there's nothing like a great NFL matchup between two great teams where some of the best football on earth is being played. The NE-Indy game earlier this year would be a good example.
I, too, would like to see a change to the NFL overtime format to where both teams are gaurunteed a posession.
I really think there's a chance we'll see a college playoff system when the BCS contract is up.
College football – to me – is hypocritical. These big businesses called colleges make millions and millions of dollars off these student athletes yet will condemn that athlete to hell if they accept a free t-shirt or hot dog from alumni. Sure, the student gets a ‘free’ education but that education is often compromised in the name of the game. Some student athletes can’t read at high school level for goodness sake!
College football, although exciting, is BS because of the hypocritical nature of the sport and the fact that it treats a lot of its college athletes like commodities rather than students!
The game changed significantly with the hard plastic helmits with face guards. It gave the players a weapon. It would be interesting to remove the face guards and go back to leather helmits.
Also at first I thought CFB = Canadian foot ball.
TJ I agree, the college game is a free minor league for the NFL. I enjoy the real student athletes, division III & the Service Academies.
Sometimes I think the NCAA is overzealous in the way certain things are enforced. I think the players should receive a stipend, not a big one considering the value of what they receive for free already but enough to go out and do things now and then and to buy stuff here and there. But I don't have any sympathy for these players with regard to the money the football programs generate. This money is already spent on them by lavishing them with top notch athletic and recreational facilities. These student athletes don't pay for anything at these recreation facilities that are nicer than any spa i've ever seen......even on the old Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous program. I saw a video the other night on 60 minutes showing the Oregon recruiting video. I couldn't believe the facilities built to lure these kids. As i said on the other thread.....if the kids don't like their situation they can forfeit their scholarships, walk on to the football team, and get student loans to pay for the educations, Room & board, and spending cash. If you did the hard math I think the result would show that probably not even 1% of these athletes have any shot at playing professionally.
The NFL is no less hypocritical. For example: The NFL comes down hard on players for endzone celebrations, yet they promote NFL.com as the place to go to "see your favorite players' TD celebrations". Then there's the whole mess with the NFLPA and the broken down former players. The NFL is every bit as F-ed up as the NCAA......probably much more so.
I like the NFL pass interference rules. If a receiver has a chance to catch a ball 55 yards downfield but is tackled, why should the offense only get 15 yrds out of it?
In college, I don't like when a player catches the ball and goes to the ground, he can't get up and run even though no opposing player touched him.
I was wondering just the other day how a game between the CFL champs and the NFL champs would be. If they can adjust MLB's AL (designated hitter) for NL parks, it would be nice if they could find a way to adjust CFL and NFL rules just to have an exhibition game.
I realize the CFL uses 12 players vs 11 in the NFL and different field lengths but it's still basically football.
I enjoy the college game more. Like Metal said, the hoopla around the college game is better. Nothing like being in a college town on game day, much more than just tailgating going on.
That's not to say it's better football than the pros, just a better brand of game.
Don't me started on the pass interference rule. I like the pro rule better because in college, if you get beat on a 50 yd pass play, pull the guy down, it won't hurt much. You might even get lucky have someone call the ball uncatchable. That's the stupid part of the rule. If I pull a player down while the ball is in the air, you can't call illegal contact or holding because they don't apply once the ball is in the air, but if the ball is uncatchable, then no foul. If the ball was uncatchable, why did the defender interfer? Why are all other penalties enforced regardless of their impact on the play? I can hold a player 50 yards from the ball, and it has no impact on the play, but it's still holding. If I block someone in the back after the ball carrier has already passed them, it's still a penalty. Pass interference is stupid in both pros and college.
College Football hands down for me. I think it is more exciting and the atmosphere is a whole lot better. The sound of the band playing their victory march and the student sections are unbeatable. It sure beats a lot of old people sitting on their hands during half the game.
The answer to this question will depend on where you grew up though. For example up here in Maine nobody watches college sports. Why? Because there is not a major college in the area. The closest would be BC and after that UCONN or Syracuse. Neither have been to terrible great in the past history. Although UCONN has become a better program the past 2 years. But still nothing to get to excited about.
If you go to the south we all know that SEC fans eat, sleep, and breath college football. I enjoy watching Big Ten and Notre Dame mathups where i am from. But if you didnt grow up a CFB fan then it is hard to change really.
I can and do watch NFL games but i dont get into nearly as much as the College games.
My all time favorite is College Basketball though. I can not sit through a quarter of the NBA. Those damn sound bites during each play are horrible.
Definatley agree with the above post. I'm a North East yankee and College football just was never that big. I have recently started to enjoy it but the BCS crap is killing me. I just don't like the way the season ends. I think it's ridiculous. I don't see how when the season's over you can sit there and say that either OSU or LSU is the National Champ. They may be if ther was a playoff but we'll never know.
I'm stationed in North Carolina and college sports is crazy here. They live and die by the season. Funny watchin NC State fans and UNC fans talk to each other like Sox and Yank fans.
I used to love just the NFL but when i got into high school I really started to like college. It seems to me there playing for something more then the nfl'ers are. They want to get to the next level. they want to make some money. There is also that sense of real rivalary. That goes for CFB and College Bball. To me there is no real real true rivals in the nfl or nba. Back in the day there was definetly rivalaries in both pro leagues, but now they seem to have faded away.
