Now I like Big Ben as much as a non- Steelers fan possibly can and I'm glad to see the guy get paid. Now with that being said is any Q.B. worth 102 million? It's an eight year deal, but holy Shiznit!
I heard on the radio the other day that a couple baseball teams were asked to go over to some other country to play an exhibition game. The players wanted $80,000 or they weren't going.
I'm sorry, but if my boss told me I had to go over to, say, Japan for work, and I told him I wasn't going unless he paid me more, I think I'd be out of a job.
I think it's safe to say that sports agents and lawyers are one in the same. Their salary pretty much depends solely on how much they get their clients.
After/if the Senators get done with the whole HGH thing, they should then make it a capital offense for team owners to ask local gov't's to help pay for stadiums. If they can afford to pay these guys this much, they can buy their own damb stadiums. Either that, or if we tax payers pay for their stadiums, than it should be illegal for them to charge us again to go inside.

On the one hand i'm disappointed at the contract amount because it will take a bite out of the team's cap space every year and i'd have liked to see him take less money to be able to get Faneca signed. However, after the Jets grossly overpaid him there's no way we could have afforded both. I'll drop Faneca 10 times out of 10 in favor of Big Ben. Now Pittsburgh better protect that investment with a significan;t O-line upgrade. I want an OL taken with the first two picks in the draft if we don't pick up a free agent, not that there's many legit OL in the free agent pool this year.
I'm glad we have him locked up. I consider him the best pure playmaking talent at the QB position in the league who can make things happen both in and out of the pocket. Now it's up to him to live up to the deal he just got because the Pittsburgh faithful won't give him much leeway should he start to falter.
A lot of money, BUT the stupid $$ athletes make these days, the Steelers locking Ben for the long term appear smart. The other BIG name QB's (Brady, Romo, Farve(Ret), etc) arent running for their lives in/out of the pocket every week. Steelers O-line is in shambles and unless they can fix it quickly, Ben will be looking at dollar signs while on his back! I'm proud of the kid and yes I am biased.
It's not even about being biased. Ben was the 2nd most sacked QB in the league last season behind an atrocious O-line and yet the only guy who finished with a better passer rating is Tom Brady. That should speak volumes to anybody with an ounce of objectivity. Ben is IMHO the best pure playmaker at the QB position in the league and there's not one single QB in the league right now i'd rather have on the Steelers roster. Hell......Manning, Palmer, or Brady would've been deceased by mid-season behind our O-line last year.
Could be the NFL wants to keep raising the price of tickets so that will force the low income fans to stay home watch...shall I dare say....The NFL Network!
There is a huge difference between football contracts and baseball contracts!! Baseball is guaranteed money,,,football isnt. Sure Big Ben signed for 102 million, but he is only guaranteed 34 million. That means if he begins to suck in a few years or if he gets injured, than the Steelers can cut him and his large contract. In baseball and basketball, if you sign for 102 million, you will be paid 102 million; not so in football. Football contracts are not guaranteed. So I dont care if they signed him for 250 million, he would only see the guaranteed money which is around 30 something million. They back load the contracts knowing that they will either cut or unload the player in a few years. Why do you think you see such good players being released by teams? Because they dont want to pay incentives...
Only 34 million, guaranteed! You say that like it's a bad thing. No matter how he plays he's still getting paid. Even if he gets cut or gets hurt he still wins. It's 34 million dollars for crying out loud.
I agree! Anybody ever figure out how long a chief would have to work to earn $34,000,000 even if you include ALL other allowance? Try it and then say "only $34 million guaranteed”.
You are missing the point. We are not talking about CG salaries here, we are talking about Athlete salaries. Which is more and which is better? Guaranteed 250 million to A-rod (all guaranteed) OR 102 million to Big Ben...34 million guaranteed.
34 million is alot of money to you and I, but in the big scope of things, its really not a HUGE contract in when it comes to professional sports.
