I heard that “Rage’ mechanical broadheads were awesome broadheads that really put deer down fast. I have used mechanical broadheads for years and have always had great luck with them. So, I figured I’d go out and buy three new Rage broadheads and head into the woods of upstate New York in search of Bambi’s granddad. After sitting in the woods for over one week and seeing only smaller bucks, Grand papa strolls by. A big fella. Ten points, big body, nice trophy to take with a bow and a lot of meat to make jerky. So, I slowly draw back to full draw… aim carefully at the killer spot… and smoothly let the arrow go. I heard the familiar ‘thud’ sound associated with an arrow striking a deer’s hide at a high rate of speed and that buck shot out of the woods like his butt was on fire. I waited a while then went to look for my arrow as I ‘knew’ I had a pass-thru. Good arrows, ‘fantastic’ broadheads, 25 yard shot with a fast compound bow… dat deer must be dead!
Funny thing, I can’t find my arrow. Huh… well, maybe it didn’t pass-thru, so I started tracking the deer (which was tough because there was no blood!). About 25 yards from where I shot I found my arrow – complete with blood and fat – in the path. So, I got a hit! Wonderful!! But upon looking at the arrow closely, the darn thing only penetrated LESS THAN three frigging inches! What the hell? These broadheads are supposed to cut through anything… except deer I guess. I tracked the deer for a long way (by following the disturbed leaves) and found a whopping three drops of blood. I guess that I hit shoulder bone and did little damage to the big buck. So, I hope we meet again in shotgun season. His hide won’t stop THAT lead!
So, I guess I am not using Rage broadheads anymore! Gone is the $33 it cost to buy them… the freezer full of venison… the rack I could have mounted… and my attitude for the rest of the day.
But I'll be back! Ohhh yyyyeeeesssss... I'll be bbbaaaaacccccckkkkk!
Now Dave, you ought to know better than that! I hit but didn't get the big one... but there is venison in the freezer and we still have shotgun season. Your shipment should be in later this month or early next...
Rob, I can't walk thru the woods any more, so I would use my ATV with a winch to drag him (if no huning buddies were around). Believe me, if I shoot it, I'll get it out of the woods!
Scheduled to have my right knee replaced in January. Maybe after that I'll be able to walk again.
Jeez, what kind of rehab time are you looking at for that procedure? Do they go in and cut the entire knee from the bottom of the femur and the top of the tibia?
Welcome back. Sorry to hear the Buck got away. I no longer hunt but admire those that still do as it is the hunters that keep the animal populations healthy and hardy through culling.
Metal, I think the rehab time is about six weeks but I am a Realtor and must climb a whole bunch of stairs each day. So this ought to set me back a long way!
Yes, they do cut the tibia and glue the replacement parts in place. I had one before (that did not work well) that hurt like hell. It still hurts today. But I can barely walk, which means I can barely work. So I need to get this done.
Pat, if you ever want to sit in the woods for a weekend, I got 700 acres and a gun or two! You’re always welcome!
