How about Ghengis Ghan or Alexander the great. I think they did some pretty good coaching/leading ? Out of your choices I think Vince Lombardi is the greatest coach.

I'm going to have to swallow my pride here, but I would have to put Casey Stengel as one of the best coaches to ever live.

Every coach who volunteers their time to teach little kids about the game.

NFL best coach: Tom Landry, George Allen
MLB best coach: Bobby Cox
NBA Hoops: Red Auerbach / Phil Jackson
College hoops: Dean Smith
College football: Eddie Robinson / Paul "Bear" Bryant

Just my opinion...
The NFL best coach was the hardest. There are so many coaching legends and current NFL coaches that I could have put into the fray... Even Bill Bellichek from the Pats....(oh that hurt to even say that). Curse

My bad, I got him mixed up with Burns. Too much disco music echoing in my head. Cool

The only coaches i really know are in college. With that being said.

C BBALL - John Wooden, 2nd and 3rd place is between Bobby Knight and Dean Smith. In a few years we can put Coach K in here as well somewhere.

C Football - This was a tough one and i can not pick just one. My favorites are Joe Pa. "Bear" Bryant, and Eddie Robinson. If Bowden wasnt at FSU i would say him too. I dont like his coaching style and the type of players he produces.

Billy Martin, Chuck Noll, John Mckay, Weeb Eubank, Dick Williams (70's A's), Dean Smith, Bobby Knight, Paul Brown, Chuck Knox, and on and on and on.

Reggie Jackson would have snapped little Billy in two in the dugout that day.

Bill Walsh is the greatest coach ever in any professional sport ...

Not only was he able to find ways to put his playmakers in position to make plays, making him the best true coach in NFL history ... he was also the best NFL GM of his day, and very much ahead of his time. He eased players out the door before their on-field production started to decline, instead of rewarding what they have done with fat contracts (like may teams do today ... look at what the Texans paid Ahman Green)

Plus, he had a tremendous eye for talent.

He left the game too early.

I look at it this way ... Dallas won three Super Bowls in a four year span (1993, 1993, 1995) right after Bill Walsh left the game following the 1988 season. I have serious doubts they win a single championship ... certainly not those three had Bill Walsh never left the game when he did.

Would a, should a, could a...Walsh is an excellent choice but what about Red Auerbach and all those Celtic Championships or John Wooden for all his. I'll agree with your assumption though in the respect that he has affected so many with his personality, coaching style, and offense.

Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Coach M is great and has had his way as the head of the Green Wave but I actually vote for Mr. Miaggi. Did you see what he did with Danielson?

1980 graduate of Stall High and loser to Summerville 31-0.
