I was informed by the neighbor yesterday that he saw 3 bucks in my yard last week. I had seen these three several times before, but was never close enough to see a rack. The cam is out on the trail they are useing now.

Ummm, mine didnt quite look like that. When the neighbor saw them, he broke out his scoped rifle and confirmed they were all three bucks.

You in Hawaii yet?

Yeah, we got here on June 8th. Just trying to get settled in. I lucked out and got SNCO housing on Hickam AFB, By far the best housing we have seen in our career. Not to mention we hardly even leave the base. We have a beach, gym fishing, commissary, exchange, gas, blah and blah. It is so nice to be back.

Coming home from class last night around midnight, I was turning into my driveway, and my headlights hit on a decent herd of deer. At least 5-7 about 30 feet in front of me. Out of this herd, at least three had noticible velvet showing and one was at least a 6 pt.

Anyone know what the average month is that antlers stop growing? I am wondering if 6 is it, or can I hope that this one might be an 8 after its all said and done. Checked the cam this morning and nothing. But once again, jumped something about 30 feet away from it. All I saw was the deer flagging like crazy.

Antler growth spans 2-4 months. When you can see a ring forming at the base of the antlers the growing season will be over. The ring cuts off the blood supply to the velvet and that is what causes the velvet to dry up and fall off. That is what I have heard from a Michigan DNR CO.

3 of them walked out on the field. He shot the biggest from his treestand. I was about 300 yards away and sitting in a ground blind. The hogs came out between us in a dip in the field. I didn't see them from my vantage point. This was north of Pensacola, FL.

This morning, I noticed a large groundhog in the field where the cattle were. I pulled out the 20 guage and took a shot. The shot found its mark, and I have bagged one of the most interesting Groundhogs I have ever seen. Some sort of mutant version. It weighs about 15 lbs, and has teeth similar to a boar. Its two top teeth curled back, laying one on the side of its haed, and the other curled back into its mouth and up into its head.

Tony,

Cool groundhog pic!! I might post that on the MD Whitetails site.

Dick,

Those deer are on Indian Head Navy Base in southern MD. It's about 20 min from the house. Lots of big ones down there. They need to be on the other side of the fence before you can hunt them.

No pics to post, but I've been out in the yard every day tuning my bow (first year ever using one). I'm locked in perfect on the 20/30/40 yard pins and anxiously awaiting mid Sept to come around! The deer come within 100yds of the house every evening. I have the perfect spot(s) planned out....time to stock the freezer!

Early season is too hot for me with all the camo, skeeters, the deer loaded with ticks as well as the days are too too warm to hang the beast properly? I like hunting in November after the leaves have fallen and the swamp has harden a bit. Of course if one was too walk through the back yard that might be a different story.

Nice photos

Dick

If you will be hunting from a treestand, you may already be doing this but if not I would recommend practicing from there. The angles and perspectives are different. When I'm bow hunting, I still get excited when deer gets in close enough for a shot.

Thats what I've read...but have not done it yet. I may do some from stands, but I think the majority will be from the ground. I've had plenty of luck while scouting with getting well within bow range of several deer...bucks and doe.

In the process of making my own mineral licks using the standard "recipes" found on the 'net. I keep getting bound up trying to find a source of supply for 50lb bags of dicalcium phosphate. None of the local Co-Ops have it nor do local farm/feed stores.

Any ideas??
