Son is changing permanent duty stations. He has just finished SERES (Maine) and has to be in Hawaii the 6th of Novemer.

I understand that the Navy will ship his car, but I'm not sure how that it to happen. Does anyone know?

Is he senior enough to have a vehicle shipped? It used to take at least E-4 before you were authorized shipment of a POV.

Other than that, he needs to talk to the base transportation office. It will vary depending on which base he is at. When in San Diego, I had to take my vehicle to Long Beach. Even with that, they gave me a hard time for not riding to the East coast and shipping from there (I was going to Italy).

Shipping a car to Hawaii is extremely easy. My son was in Pensacola, and for a vacation I drove with him to drop it off in New Orleans. If you drop it off in New Orleans they will truck it across the states to California where they will load it on the ship.

Your car is limited to only a certain amount of items, so don't think you can load some of your household good in it because they won't allow it. Basically all you can have is jumper cables, basic tool kit, and just glove box items.

My son was a E2 when he shipped it. I beleive any rate can ship cars to Hawaii.

A couple things you got to make dang sure you do is his name MUST appear on the registration, and if going oversea (Example: Japan) his name must show up on the title too. Remember, if it isn't, then then car will sit at the port until you have those documents.

Call ahead to and tell them your year and make of your car. Certain cars are probitive from being ship until they have all recalls done by the car manufacture. I guess some Ford Trucks have gas leaks, and you have to prove the recall was done. The port will know which cars can ship.

If your smart, you will arrive at the port on Saturday. The shipping company is not open, so they must pay you per diem for Sat, Sun, so you get a free paid vacation out of it (For military people shipping cars)....

Lastly, to make it simple on yourself, wash the car at a normal car wash prior to going to the shipping company. They require that the car be clean, and it's alot easier to wash it at a car wash, than their hooky garden hose.

Here is the shipping company that the Navy uses...

Thank you so much. That helps me a lot. He is an E-4, but with everything being so screwed up with his place tickets, etc. he is just going to drive back to NC from Maine and then I will just get his car to Charleston to get it shipped from there.

If the car has a loan on it, he will need a letter from the bank stating they are giving permission for it to be shipped to Hawaii.

There needs to be a copy of the orders, registration and insurance multiple copies. With you doing it not him, you will need a Specific POA to do so. Without any of that they will not ship it. They will not pay for the mileage & Per Diem if the AD member is not there. So if you are doing it, it will be at your own cost.

There can only be 1/4 of a tank as well.
