Funny you would bring this up...I was up at McDill AFB today which is a joint service command. While in the Uniform Shop, I overheard a Navy Petty Officer inquire about purchasing the PT gear. He was told that he would have to special order them as they were not being carried as a regular stock item.

I bought the new pt uniform and I like it and so do all the people that I am stationed with, I would imagine the people that have a problem with the liner in the shorts are proabably just too fat.

I already bought mine, too, but not by choice. I was ordered to have them about a week after they came out. My command doesn't want to hear any crap about Oct 1. This message has been edited. Last edited by: bryner, |

Andy bought his too. He has also made the adjustment to the "modesty" liner.
My husband's Command did the same thing. They told everyone to get them within a week of being in the NEX. |

I heard there were issues with the lettering on the shirts that when dried in the dryer they could end up melting together. I personally have not bought mine yet.

This is hilarious - sorta. Taxpayers paid for 'testing' I assume...but no one in the 'test group' worked up a sweat? And nobody thought to wash 'em? Sigh...who tested 'em - Paris Hilton?
Brings back the old saying: "Run she may, but shine she must!" Sailors will 'look good' standing up, huh? 'Modesty panels'? Sounds like the panel on my assistant's desk. (We all wear blue jeans, so it doesn't matter. Ya know - Academy Sports has aisles full of suitable athletic outfits. No one complains about their stuff. How come Navy Dep't didn't just get some manufacturer to change a color or two and be done with it. I'm sure Nike or someone would be pleased to do it for nothing - just to get the sales. I cut out the liner and just wear the compression shorts underneath. That modesty liner is a real pain in the elbows.

This is why we can't have nice things... |
Why we have a "PT" uniform is beyond me...and +1 to everything that you just said! AO1 |

i haven't put 'em in the dryer. I wash them with my delicates with the woolite and air dry. Not sure if he has done any unauthorized surgery on his shorts yet.... There can be no freedom without sacrifice |

I have dried Andy's in the dryer a couple of times and have not experienced any melting. I only dry our clothes on low heat. I think they are talking about the high heat of the ships dryers causing the melting. |

I agree although I am not in anymore. I kinda think it is a waste of money. Plus what is wrong with a t-shirt and a pair of shorts? I remember the ones issued in boot camp knit shorts that when washed once shrunk and then your asss hung out. Navy t-shirt was ok but looked dingy after a lot of washes. |

I was looking forward to getting them when they were stocked and was disappointed when I actually purchased them. The liner rides up too easily, the shirt doesn't stay tucked in at all, and I've yet to see the vaunted 'wicking action' actually happen -seems the sweat just sticks to you instead of the shirt.
I think these are a step up from what we were issued in boot camp, but I was doing better using our black shorts and command t-shirt for PT then using these. Maybe they were built for more milder climates but they just don't cut the mustard in Hawaii. I would rather shell out an additional $10-20 and get some awesome PT gear that not only looks good but works too, then just settle for mediocre gear that was worse then I was using before for command PT. Just my 2 cents anyways. |

Well stated. And makes sense, which the Uniform Board sure never did. While I'm jackin my jaws.. What the he** is a "modesty panel," I thought you wore jocks with PT gear.. |

+1 The Exchange has scads of suitable stuff by every manufacturer under the sun as well, all at a price comparable to the new "issued" stuff.
Or maybe your legs simply don't fit into athletic shorts OR their liners very well. Plenty of people out there with big legs, usually from sports, who are not "just too fat." |

From what I understand from my husband (who is 6'0" and 155lbs) is that the liner rides up. If it is happening to someone as thin as he is then I can imagine what it is like for those who weigh more and have additional muscle mass. |

Regarding the fit, it depends on the person. I'm 6'1", approx 183 lbs, and I have no issues with the fit of the shorts (I use the 6" length) except for the waist - seems they were just a mite generous with the sizing. The medium fits like the large shorts I used to wear. I've also gone for 5-7 mile runs with no riding up of the liner. The shirt now, is a different matter. It's OK for wearing with jeans, but I don't think I would want to wear it for any kind of strenous PT.
RiverRat, back in the day all us guys wore under the shorts was jocks. Now what you wear under the shorts is determined by your comfort level. Some wear spandex shorts, some regular underwear, some ... Mac, the Navy probably could not get a major manufacturer to make the stuff because a) they would probably have to retool their equipment to meet specific requirements on threads per inch, etc., and b) there is a requirement for all US military uniforms to be made in the US from US materials. A lot of manufacturers (Nike, Brooks, Underarmor, etc.) can't meet that requirement. I don't have the citation anymore, but it is in the Code of Federal Regulations. |
