I was at the airport today and I saw people in the army, air force, and marines all wearing their cammies there, and they all looked so proud to serve. I ask all the active duty guys here to start wearing your utilities when you travel and show pride in being in the navy, next time I fly I'll be wearing mine!

What about the regs that state the utilities are for wear at work and directly to and from base only. With the slight exception of a quick stop for milk. The airport is not a quick stop...

Navy personnel flying commercial under orders do so in thier dress uniforms.
And what elemanski said. The most dangerous phrase in the language is, "We've always done it this way." - Rear Admiral Grace Hopper |

And likely those guys are on their way to/from the Middle East. Otherwise, I have seen Army/AF/Marines in their dress uniforms when traveling in CONUS.

It's not always the best OPSEC to fly OCONUS in uniform.

I appreciate the sentiment you are trying to show here, but the others have already responded accordinly. Besides, IMO, I think the dress uniform is much more sharper and stands out much more than those wearing cammies. Ever see Northeast Wisconsin for hunting season?? Lots of cammies, not many are military. |

When we left NMPS Norfolk we were told that we could wear our Desert Camo...People at the airport new exactly where you'd been and where you were going...I got a few "Thank yous" but nothing like the Budweiser commercial.

Depending on rating some Sailors need to be in cammies ie MAs, EOD guys, Seabees, etc. They aren't issued to your guy on a ship though.

I am proud of my Naval heritage...forgive me for serving in a post 9/11 world where sailors take TAD assignments working for the Army and don't carry their full Sea Bag due to operational assigment. I'm not sure how many of the thousands of IA sailors out there have brought with their dress uniform to the desert? I know that if I had brought it with and I did wear it home it would have been a nice sandy orange. Nothing stays clean over there no matter how you stowe it.
Thanks for you support. |

I can understand the practicality of wearing cammies if you're issued them and are traveling to or from a place where they are appropriate - and as long as you're following policy, of course.
But I fail to see how servicemembers who wear cammies can be more "proud to serve" than someone who is in a dress or non-utility uniform - ? Pride comes from YOU and in how you carry yousrself as much as it comes from the clothes you wear. |

No need for Sailors to wear working uniforms in public outside of what is allowed in Uniform Regs and local prescribing authority.
Partially concur with DanSpitz - PRIDE comes primarily from within you, and is evidenced by how you carry yourself regardless of what you are wearing. |

Traveling (sitting in an airplane, waiting around to board a flight) is not a dress uniform occasion, I am still going to wear my utilities when I fly.

I have to concur with Dan Spitz here.
It really doesn't matter what uniform you are wearing in the airport. People have as much respect for the person wearing their dress uniform in transit to their next command as those wearing fatigues coming to or going to the sandbox. If one thing you do notice today is that despite an unpopular war or political views, the public does respect those who are serving today, despite the uniform. Back in 2001, some friends and I attended the National Fire Academy and we planned on going to New York City after the class was done. The class was scheduled for October of 2001, and everyone knows what happened on 9/11. After that we raised some money to just give to a firehouse when we got to NYC. One friend contacted a firehouse and we got to stay at the firehouse for a couple nights. While in NYC we wore our fire dept T-shirts as we walked around the city. I can not tell you how many people came up to us and thanking us for the job we do. We told them we did not help out at Ground Zero, nor that we attended any funerals. We were told it did not matter, because we were firefighters. Same thing here, it does not matter what you are wearing in an airport. It does not matter the job you do. It doesn not matter if you deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan or not. What does matter is that people ARE serving and the public does recognize that. |

This is taken directly from the uniform regs Chapter one , Section three:
So unless you get it approved, you're not authorized to fly in utilities. |

shipmates...
some grounding may be needed on your positions.....that dress canvas seperates you in public from all others as US NAVY sailors.....called the pride of the US NAVY......remember manning the rail comming into port.... its not how you stand, or how you represent YOURSELF..... you are reprsenting THE US NAVY, and AMERICA......its not about YOU or the BS PC or hip hop BS generation.....its about representing the oath you dedicated yourself too and upholding traditions. because you spend time on watch somewhere doesnt change things.....millions before you have done it too without requiring selfish ME requirements..... the military is not there to satisfy all of your mommy stuff......you are accepted in the navy to prove your worth..... those that want ME STUFF ...well, sounds like some extra duty may be in order to me...... Must be quite different than what you've shown here. USS Liberty, Never Forget. I believe in Murrays Law, he thought Murphy was an optimist. |
