Well research is good and all, but we might be able to have some fun on it too!
Let's see, a BBQ on the fantail, sunbathing amid ships, and fishing off the bow. Hmm- now where to put the cold beer. Well, someone will have to volunteer to take charge of that.
Oh, don't worry. The onboard computer is the designated Captain, helmsman and navigator.

Not a chance - Microsoft will have it shut down for upgrades at least twice a day. And the connectivity will be atrocious.

With that configuration it would be more sub than ship in a sea. Thats not real good for things above deck height.

USS Liberty, Never Forget.

I believe in Murrays Law, he thought Murphy was an optimist.

Somewhere out there is an article with photos of the SSN type of hull, of the same scale, that is in that Idaho Lake.

I've sailed with a guy that lives close to the area and he keeps waiting for someone in the boat department to either die or retire, and open up a craft operator position. I believe he is ready to give up deep sea jobs.

As cool as it is only two full scale versions will be built if reports are correct. Under pressure from Congress the Navy is cancelling this class of ship. The DDG-1000 class is said to cost too much to build. Manning levels were to be less than half that of the DDG-51.

Perhaps you should learn what you are taking about before putting your thoughts to word as to the relation of this topic, (Cool Vessel), as it had NOTHING to do with DDG-1000.

The hull form you see in the pix was ONE of the hull forms considered for the DDG-X/DDG-21/DDG-1000, but rejected.
The AESD hull form is based on the 5565 tumble-home hull tested early in the DD(X) program. As a result of availability of the AESD demonstrator craft, planning is underway to conduct other technology demonstrations.

The hull form was decided to be used when mainly testing various concept underwater discharge waterjet propulsion systems and various concept electric drive propulsion systems.

The use of the hull form, in this manner, has NOTHING to do ,at this time, with the DDG-1000.
But of course that does not mean that the testing results could not be used on some future
DD or other class ship hull form, including the DDG-1000. if funded.

The first testing of a concept underwater discharge waterjet propulsion system, known as AWJ-21,has been completed and another propulsion system known as GD/EB RIMJET propulsor, has been installed for testing.
----------------------------------------------------------------
Released: 3/18/2008
"Arlington, Va. — Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC) returned the Navy´s Advanced Electric Ship Demonstrator—or Sea Jet—with a new modified stern to the Office of Naval Research (ONR) on March 14, 2008. Sea Jet now incorporates the Rimjet propulsor, plus associated mechanical and electrical systems. The Advanced Electric Ship Demonstrator was accepted at the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division, Acoustic Research Detachment (NSWCC-ARD) in Bayview, Idaho. NSWCCD-ARD, located on the shores of Lake Pond Oreille, is now taking Sea Jet through a series of hydrodynamic, electromagnetic, and acoustic testing."

Of course there are other concept technology demonstrations that the craft can be used for.
One such effort is the design of a low signature deckhouse for the model.

One of the 'truths' of ship development is that it takes a looooong time. As with 'concept cars' - what you see at the auto show may never (probably won't) appear in that form in your local showroom. But the nuances of some aspect of development will probably be under the hood somewhere, in some form, in some vehicle, some time.

As an example, the last major project on which I worked before I retired (1/3 of a century ago - urk!) was something called "The SSN 21 Project - Submarines for the 21st Century" My piece involved sonar development. The SSN-21 class started appearing over 25 years after we started thinking about it.

Ship development is clearly not a Lockheed Skunk Works evolution. Every time there is a newly-minted admiral involved, one can add 5 years to a project - and admirals get cycled through every couple of years. It's a wonder we build anything... Roll Eyes
