I have a question for anyone out there who can answer it for me. If I were to become involved with and marry a foreign national, would I lose my SECRET clearance? What other complications oculd arise from this?

I don't know what the 'official' answer is - but I know what the 'good sense' answer is for a young man entering nuclear power school - Run, do not walk, away from any relationship (foreign or domestic) until you complete training and qualifications.
And take it from the Old Skipper - stick to American women - waaay less 'drama'. By the way, this is one of the reasons, in the old days, that you would need the CO's approval to marry anyone. "Mack the Knife" CDR USN (Ret) Illegitimi non carborundum |

so lets say i get to my boat and get qualified and said FORN is still in the picture, does maintaining my nuke-iness preclude me from marrying a foreign national?

Johnny_b yanked the clearance of one of his guys once for marrying a Mexican National without going through the proper Hoops.
several of his Fellow IWOs were/are married to FN(friends and Allies.. Filipinas and Japanese, Mostly). But that doesn't mean they didn't have to go through a whole lotta stuff to make it happen. Nuc may be even more anal. is it possible: maybe. all sorts of things have to line up and HER background check has to come back squeaky clean. There can be no freedom without sacrifice |

If the Navy wanted you to have a wife, they would have issued you one. Heed CDR Mack's recommendation.
cleonard19 You are just suffering from hormonal dysfunction and common testosterone poisoning. We all suffered from it in our younger years. But with good focus on goals and achievement in your present early Navy training you can overcome said current problem(s). When in doubt, return here for guidance. The world does not revolve around you know what, |

Riiigghhtt. Commander you want to look at this bridge I got for sale in Brokyln. Stay single until you get permission from your grandkids to get married. Thats the American way. USS Liberty, Never Forget. I believe in Murrays Law, he thought Murphy was an optimist. |

Well, if that were the case the question would have been related to hooking up with a FN, not marrying one. the girl I'm with i've been with now for over four years and i was just exploring my options as she's started nagging with the "future" questions and i'm not positive i'm ready to ditch out on this one. |

Has the background investigation for your security clearance been started yet? I seem to recall that when you are interviewed you are asked about any associations with FN's. Surely you noted this, or will note this when itnerviewed? |

The adage that IC2 quoted about if the Navy wanted you to have a wife then they would have issued you one tho funny has some truth to it.
Because of the state of national security and the secrets you will bear you must recognize the truth that you may have to choose between her or your career. Now, there are other things you could do within the Navy that would not require you to hold a security clearance. Go convential vs. nuke. Choose a completely different rating. Things of that nature. Its not an easy decision, but one you may have to make. And remember, the background is not just what she has done, but who her family is and what they have done as well. I'm sure you've picked a good one, but guilty by association sucks too. |

I ditto the above. You will have to talk to your command about it, and explain the situation, yada yada yada. It CAN be done, but there are a ton of channels you must jump through to go about it the right way, and if you don't....well, any chance you had will be gone. Talk to your CCC and if he can't help answer all your questions he will know someone who does. |

I was in with the ACSM just last week before I went on leave, he told me i was cleared for SECRET clearance (something about being a sub vol vs CONFIDENTIAL for the surface nukes) but i never actually interviewed with anyone for my clearance. I just did the online form and that was it. If there was a question in there on relationships with foreign nationals, i'm sure i answered it accurately, i just don't remember if the question was asked.

I had a top secret clearance when I married my first wife a FN. She was Canadian. This did not affect me at all. I have also know other radiomen that have married foreign nationals with no problem. On the other hand if you married a Russian you may have a problem. I think it may be where she is from and how close her ties are to her country.

Don't even THINK about getting married until you are in the Fleet. The Nuke pipeline is hard enough with out worrying about a spouse. You won't be home often enough to make it worth while anyway, and when you ARE home all you'll want to do is sleep not fool around.
If she's pushing you for a "future"... think REEEEAL hard about that one. Do NOT, repeat NOT, get married just because she's pushing you. You must make sure YOU are ready... and if you are under the age of 25... you're not ready. Statistically speaking 50% of marriages fail... even MORE with Squids, even MORE with Nuke Squids. You want to go boats... well heck you just got a... oh crap... It's rough. The reason you got a Secret is because ALL submariners get secret, it's a requirement. You probably WERE intereviewed, you just didn't realize it. Since they do so many of them in the pipeline it's just another step you went through. |

Women equal drama, it doesn't matter what their nationality is. And the part on the SF-86 about relationships with foreign nationals is right after you list your entire family. If I recall correctly, it asks if you have a "spouse-like" relationship with anyone. I just looked it up, Section 15 of the SF-86. "If you mother, father, sister, brother, child, or current spouse or person with whom you have a spouse-like relationship is a US citizen by other than birth, or an alien residing in the US provide the nature of the individual's relation ship to you, and the individual's name and date of birth on the first line. On the second line, provide the individual's naturalization certificate or alien registratio number and use one of hte document codes below to identify proof of citizenship status. Provide additional information on that line as requested." Any changes to your security status and you need to inform your command security manager. AO1 (NAWMU-1 Assistant Security Manager)...see I know things other than how to make big boom!!! |

I'm not sure I agree with the premise that American women are "waaaay less drama" mayby not drama when it comes to security clearance, but believe me.....American girls are PLENTY of drama!......LOL! |

I guess as part of 'full disclosure' I should tell y'all that my Texas-born bride (whom I have previously reported can ride, rope and shoot) told me to say that.

Heed some of the advice here. Stay away from marriage until you've completed training and preferably until you've done your first tour of sea duty.
Is she already in the US or ? Not saying she is this way, but have seen some FN females from various countries use US service personnel as a way to get into the US. For that matter, I have no doubt there were some FN males that used female US service personnel as a means to get into the US. As to the security issue, best person to discuss this with is your command security manager face-to face. |
