The Army has these rounds that they can attack troops with, by exploding the rounds overhead and shooting out lots of shrapnal.

After reading about the Somali pirates and there home bases, I thought this would be a good round to have if the time came to shell there bases.

The US Navy has many impressive flavors of ammunition, including HE shells with proximity fuses. There's also a few really cool new 5 inch shells that are essentially a modern equivelant of grape shot. If you're interested in seeing what you can find out about them on google, they're called HE-ET and KE-ET.

Can we use this type of stuff? I would hate for the rest of the world to hate us a "warmongering, inhuman pigs" for using munitions that might hurt in retaliation for our people getting beheaded.....

When I was on deployment back in '06 the USS Gonzales, the DDG in the USS Peleliu's ESG had a run in with some Somali pirates off the coast of Somalia. Needless to say it did not go to well for the pirates, one was killed and five other were wounded. We ended holding two of the wounded pirates in the brig of the Peleliu for or few weeks then we turned them over to the Somali government. Those guys were in some pretty bad shape when they brought them onboard one was burned up pretty badly, the other was missing a leg.

When using NGFS or Army Arty. one of the things in your Call for fire request, is the type of target, troops in open, bunker, etc, etc. The Gun Boss or FDC can then assign the type ammo Frag, HE, AP, and I'm sure many more I've never heard of, since we're always finding new and better ways to kill and maime each other. For troops in the open, when fireing indirect fire, we used VT Frag which would burst over their heads, which ruined their day. For direct fire, nothing beats a Ma Duce fireing APIT, or a 105 Howitzer fireing flechete/beehive rounds..

BLMP - A very effective way to kill someone who just happens to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Also a very selective round - it will not harm anything outside of about 12" of its impact zone with the possible exception of shrapnel damage. The modern cannonball.

Swifts had an 81mm mortar that could fire drop or trigger method. Flechet rounds can tack a body to a tree in a heart stopping beat. Westpac Willie
