Veterans Day 5k run on campus the Saturday before (as well as the Marine Corps Ball). Well, at least one of us for the run, need child care if we both want to do it.

Probably skipping classes the day of (school does not close for the day). At least, that was my original plan, with all the days I've missed for funerals this month I may not be able to. Will at least read "Americas White Table" to the kids and hopefully take them to the on-campus war memorials.

possibly taking advantage of a few of these too

Great Topic Yeoman Mike,

My local USSVI SubVet Shipmates will all meet at the VFW for breakfast and then load up and ride in the local Veterans Day Parade. We have an “Old School” diving klaxon mounted in the square hitch of my buddy Mark’s F-150. We power it up with a suitcase Honda 115VAC generator. The parade finishes back near the VFW… (we’ll be kinda’ thirsty by then I Imagine…). My Post (Army Active LTC/O5) Commander will more than likely be the honored Individual riding at the head of the column. It is always a good turnout for the local rural agricultural area we live in. Our Army Guard, and USMCR local units will be well represented. Both Organizations recently returned from their second tours in the “Sand Box”. Our local USAR Transportation Company (POL) is still “Down Range” in the box at this time…

God Bless Our Troops!!!

PS,
On the 7th we have our local USMC Birthday Ball. Hands down THE BEST military formal function I have ever been too!!!, and I have been to lots of them, Army, Navy and etc… Our Local USMCR Tankers kick AZZ on tradition, food and when the music starts it is PARTY The F&*K DOWN!!!!... My “dance insurance” is coming all the way from Arizona for the event!!!!!

This will be my team's second annual Veterans day get together(3rd if you count the first one was in Iraq, lol).
We will go to Hy-Vee for a free breakfast, then we go to the indoor shooting range, then to a bar, where we pay off the winners from the shooting range, Big Grin. Last year, about 1/3 of my 28 man team came. This year, about 1/2 will be down for it, so I am excited. Good times.

Well, unfortunately I will be working. Even though my employer is a former Marine, he does not see this as a holiday. I will continue to prepare myself to return to service after 4 years of being on a medical retirement from the Navy. The greatest way I feel I can honor my fellow service-members is by properly preparing myself to be an asset to the fleet again.

Unfortunately a lot of folks see the day as just another opportunity to make money. Some companies that are government contractors will make you work on either Veteran's Day or Columbus Day (which day may/may not be your choice) in exchange for getting the day off after Thanksgiving without taking leave.

In your case I won't say if he is right or wrong without knowing a lot more about the situation.

We will be having a potluck at our Legion post. Sharing sea stories whether or not you were a sailor or not. Our post is small so we always have good fun and a good dinner.

Working and thinking about my son deployed to the sandbox.

YN1 Mike -- Do you know where the Moving Wall will be going next? I'd like to visit it if it comes to the Tampa/Bradenton area (if I haven't already missed it).

Every year the local school system invites all veterans, of any conflict, to have breakfast at the school and then the whole school, kindergarten thru high school seniors have a program for the vets in the school gym. All the students attend the assembly. I have gone the past five years and some of the programs the kids have put on have been nothing but fabulous.
Usually one of the recruiters, senior ones, give a talk or presentation.
They pass a microphone around and each of us stand and identify ourselves, our service and conflict.
They remember us and what we did to serve this country.

Found out today that I've got the day off and its opening day of deer season. Since I don't want to reinact the landing at Normandy I'll stay put till after the first weekend of the season is over.
I don't know of anything going on in town other than a wreath laying in the morning which is kind of sad. The town had a big cerimony after 9/11 but it faded out fast after that. Memorial day is the big one around here sadly.

Is your local VFW or American Legion Post doing anything special?

Just wanted to share the following article..

We must remember the true meaning of Veterans Day

As a proud Afghanistan veteran who is preparing for Veterans Day, I find it tragic that so many of my fellow Americans view Nov. 11 as just another day off from work.

I lost a friend in Afghanistan's Operation Enduring Freedom, and I made a promise to his family that they would never, ever be forgotten.

With wars on two fronts — and the Veterans Affairs workload topping 1 million claims — it's time for all Americans to remember the true meaning of Veterans Day. Call one of our local VFW Posts to take part in our ceremonies.

And as we near the holidays, please keep our deployed troops and their families in your prayers. Send a care package or donate to the program that supports our troops and veterans, such as VFW Operation Uplink (www.operationuplink.org).

Always remember those who have fought for your freedom.

Staff Sgt. Crystal Barton
