I usually take them to the dry cleaners, but I'm a little short on time... Anybody have any tips on machine washing dress or working whites?

gentle or delicates cycle, cold water. dry, if you must, on LOW heat or air dry, take them out IMMEDIATELY. Woolite if ya got it.

don't Bleach unless they are really grey and dull. Bleach tends to yellow them.

have to disagree...yellowing is normally from inadequate RINSING...the soap 'burns'... Argue

If you do have a spot you can use a Chlorox bleach pen directly on it before you throw it into the wash. It works like a charm and has saved me from buying a new white shirt on 2 occasions.

Service Dress Whites - never washed them, always used the cleaners. But then, I always had a set ready to wear while the other was in the cleaners.

Summer Whites - wash permanent press cycle, dry on lowest setting. Never had a problem myself.

BTW, there is no such thing as "Working Whites".

Get your bucket, scrub brush, box of Tide, and some tie ties and find an open spot at that big cement table. Make sure you get the collar of your skivy shirt, and the inside of your White hat extra clean while your at it.

Ah yes, the good old scrub table and the infamous "clothes stop." I don't believe that memory will ever be forgotten! December 69 to March 70.

By the time I got there in May of 79 they had transitioned to sending out the laundry to somwhere, NEX related as I remember it, so passing it out every night was as close as we came to doing laundry.

Turns out I didn't have to wash my dress whites anyway, I still had a fresh pair hanging up from the dry cleaners.

On a side note, I got to be part of the flag detail for a retiring ETC, and not only did we pass on the Flag without a hitch,... we all looked damn sharp doing it. I think we made the chief real proud.

We ironed it.
The contractor washed everything except skivvie bags. We washed those in house and ironed utilities. We had a watch rotation of sorts. The watch woke you up and you had 20 minutes each night to iron for the next day.

Guess they have changed the material from when I was in. We just washed them with the whites and maybe put Blueing in. We always had a set done by off shore laundry that were starches and pressed ready for Liberty or Inspecion. Course we only had Undress Whites
For the hat I would wash it and rub in a large amount of salt on the sides. Then set some place to dry. Looked great and stayed white.

I forgot about the ironing. I don't remember any watch type thing. Everyone just ironed there own stuff. used those big scrub tables in the heads, put the towel you had used that day down and ironed on top of it, one shirt one pair of pants, didn't take that long. We just folded everthing else.
