Talking to TMC friday and he said he was going to the lake this weekend. He has to to justify that yaught to his bride. Wink

I was wondering, people say they are going "To the Lake" no matter where they live so its kind of tough to figure out which lake it is. Up here its usually Winnipausaukee next to the white mountains but could be Sunnapee or a number of others.

If you were going to "The Lake" or "The Mountains" or "The Shore" where you live where exactly would that put you?

"The shore" - Folley Beach or Isle Of Palms across town

"The lake" - for me, that means a 10 hour drive to Deep Creek Lake in Maryland where we have our yearly family reunions.

I'd love to hear the response from someone from Minnesota, with 10,000 to choose from. Smile

Around here, it is always referred to as going "up North". You could be going to Wisconsin Dells from Green Bay (actually south and west) but people will say they're going "up north" to the Dells. For us though, up north would be anywhere with more trees, more lakes and more outdoor activities than where you currently are living.

Like DC2crabby, my "up north" is not north at all, it's west.

"The lake" - Lake Winnebago in Wisconsin, all of three blocks away.

Well...the distances are so great in Texas, that you could be anywhere. From just east of Albuquerque, NM to the Mexican border on the Gulf of Mexico (the 'shore', if you will). From across the Rio Grande at Juarez to just north of Shreveport, LA. How many of you can drive 898 miles on an Interstate and still be in your state?

"The Lake" for me, when I was growing up was Grand Lake St. Marys, in Northwest Ohio. We lived up the street 1/4 mile from the State Park and the North shore Beach. In those days, when it was warm, you better be in the park or on the beach before 1000 or you couldn't find a spot!
I grew up fishing, camping and knowing how to handle watercraft.

Going to the Lake for us is an hour drive north to Lake Texoma. {tex-ok border} Going to the Beach however would put us with a three hour drive to Galveston. Although I must admit with Lake Travis nearby Mac is one lucky Texan. That is one v.v. clean/clear and the most
unbelievably blue lake.

I have never measure the exact miles but...
Key West,Fl to Pensacola,Fl...Estimated Distance: 833.87 miles. But when you get to Pensacola you have not yet reached the Alabama state line.
Not all of that is by Interstate as no Interstate extends to Key West. Must take US 1 out of Key West to the Fla Turnpike to I-75 to I-10 to stay on Interstate type roadways.
So may not be quite as far as across Texas on I-10 but darn close.

When Minnesota gets as many 'named' lakes as Florida, let me know. Last count was 20,000, plus. Smile

It is quite interesting that I live closer to New Orleans or even Oklahoma City than I do to El Paso.

the lake would be Medina. Its only about 20 minutes away. I could go to the Medina River as well, but the Guadalupe is much nicer, but more of a drive. the shore would be Corpus Christi. Havent checked out any of the other hot spots on the gulf. But with that said, growing up my favorite places were the lakes in our neighborhood just blocks away. Or headed out to Charleston or Myrtle Beach.

For me, where I live?

"The Lake" - Lake Anna
"The Mountains" - usually the Shenendoahs, sometimes the Blue Ridge Mountains, depending. I go camping both places.
"The Shore" - either Virginia Beach or Nag's Head. A quick trip to the beach for us is a trip down the Rappahannock.

I can do that in Virginia, but it would involve a lot of U-turns.

When I was a kid we would got to Lake Puckaway in Wisconsin.

Now my lake is the Atlantic Ocean was just there last week and sometimes wonder why I even left. I have always had a love affair with water. The Atlantic is all of about 1000 miles away from where I live In IL.

Dang SD, we're practically neighbors. I live near Winchester.

So mine are:
The Lake: Lake Anna, Lake Frederick in VA or Mt Storm in WV
The Mountains - I'm already there.
The shore - hmmm either Virginia Beach or Nag's Head.

Oh, yeah! Almost forgot - on Lake Travis (not far from our little pad) is Hippy Hollow - the nude beach. Ah, yes... "The Eyes of Texas Are Upon You!"

Lake = Lake Moultrie

Mountains = Have to drive too far, cause there are no Mountains east of the Mississippi River.

Shore = Don't do the shore thing anymore, I take the boat out to Ft. Sumter and gaze out toward 2 Charlie and get misty eyed.

If you're a Sailor and don't know what 2 Charlie is, its a lot like 1SD, only its on the Other coast, and a different color Wink

Hey DC I always prefered the Big Lake off of Door County. You know that one called Lake Michigan and on the other side the Bay of Green Bay. So that was north and east. Or should I say "Up Nort der hey" in my best Wisconsin accent.

I will be up there in a few weeks to enjoy the cooler temps.

But I am such an Innnocennnt mum. Just ask my boi. Hmm. Wait. On second thought don't do that. I do love the color and clarity of the lake though. Have many fond memories of the many trips we took down there with the pontoon boat.
