There is a myth that T-34s performed very well during WW2. The Soviets paraded those tanks during every VE Day parade (in 1945, 1955, 1965, 1985, 1990).
But T-34s were not good tanks. They were inferior to German tanks For example, during the battle of Kursk (during which the T-34 tanks were the standard tanks of the Red Army), the Red Army lost 6064 whereas the German Army lost 900 tanks (according to the Red Army itself). That means that the Germans achieved, in terms of tank warfare, a 6:1 kill ratio during the battle of Kursk. That means that German tanks were SUPERIOR to T-34s. T-34s were not able to penetrate a Tiger's armor at ANY range frontally, they could fight Tigers ONLY from the sides at a distance of ca. 500 meters. |

Good at math, are you?
There were less than 1500 Tigers produced. There were over 84,000 T-34s produced. A "6:1 kill ratio" doesn't mean much at that point. As Stalin once said, "Quantity has a quality all its own". Besides, you assume that every German tank was equivalent to the Tiger and that every Russian tank was a T-34 in those losses. You also assume that tanks are only killed by tanks, or that tanks only fight other tanks. Neither of these statements are true. Read your sources again. Sullivan013 |

The Soviet T-34, particularly the T-34/85 was a good design, but the often criticized Sherman was closer to the T-34 than many would think. The T-34/76 just happened to be introduced and face German armor earlier, on more suitable terrain.

Folks,
If a German tanker had to pick going up against a T-34 of a Sherman I strongly believe they would pick the Sherman. Until the British came up with the Firefly version mounting a better cannon the Sherman was at a sever disadvantage. Ask the Sherman crews from WW -- ie those that are still living. Finally, after D-Day and the breakout, General Eisenhower was outraged at the number of Shermans being lost and the US Army ordnance refusal to regun the Shermans as offered by the British before D-Day.
