I just got out of active duty as a 92A after 8 yrs. So I went into the Guard recruiters office and told him I want to do 11B in the Guard. He told me that I can only do the MOS I currently have which is 92A. That I guess MOS's are limited. Is that actually true, that I can only go into the Guard as my current MOS and not as an 11B?

Mostly true. You may only enlist into an MOS that you hold now, a 35 (MI) MOS, a Special Forces MOS or for the OCS option. Good luck; cul8r.

Many states are transitioning their forces to Infantry BDEs/DIVs. You can always try to go to the 2-week Infantry reclass schools they have everywhere. I dont' agree with them, but they have them.

You can enlist in TN as 11b. I recently helped a prior service guy get back in.

Aight y'all, so I finally enlisted as 11B as I wanted. Secondary MOS 92A. I know that in the next few months I will have to go to AIT whether if its at Fort Benning or another NG 11B AIT. The thing is I just also recently enrolled in college and beginning classes on October 5th. I dont want to drop my classes just so I can go and do a quick AIT then come back home again. I do want to train for 11B but like I said I dont want to drop out of my college classes since Im using my post 9/11 gi bill. I havent drilled with my new unit yet but how can I receive the proper training for 11B but STILL continue with college classes?

*and yes yes I know that if I get orders to deploy that no matter what, I will have to drop classes then but in those circumstances then its all good*

Try to get your unit readiness NCO to move your school date through ATTRS. Other than that, you're in the same boat as thousands of NG Soldiers, myself included. Even as someone who knows people, it's hard to move dates around so I can not interrupt a semester in mid-session. All you can do is pester your Readiness NCO. Pester a lot. Bribe him, buy his wife diamonds... Whatever it takes.

So... I have a new question hehe. As a Guard soldier can I volunteer to deploy with a unit going to Iraq? If so, how long does it take on average for me to get approved after I sent my request?

You can volunteer do deploy with a unit from your state that is deploying. I'll let someone with more experience here answer that one.

There is a volunteering for deployment section in GKO that shows what is available and how to go about doing it. It does not have to be with your State, but you will need your State CoC's permission.

My brief comment with this is sometimes your employer can find out if you volunteered or if you were picked so careful how you present this to your employer. I remember a while ago a TXARNG Major that I worked with that deployed to BOSNIA in the late 1990s.....the Fortune 100 firm found out he volunteered. They were NOT happy with him for some reason. I don't know the whole story on this but it hinged on him volunteering versus being ordered.

If your low on the totem pole at your civilian workplace, I wouldn't worry about this part though because chances are your abscence will not have the financial impact this other guy's abscence did.

Just posting for others benefit. Cool
