Gov't Creates Resource for LGBT Elders
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced Wednesday that it would create the first national resource center to assist communities across the country in providing services and support for older LGBT individuals. As many as 1.5 to 4 million LGBT individuals are age 60 and older, and many agencies that serve elders may be unfamiliar with their unique needs, according to the announcement from HHS. “The new resource center for LGBT elders will provide information, assistance and resources for both LGBT organizations and mainstream aging services providers at the state and community level to assist them in the development and provision of culturally sensitive supports and services,” said the announcement. “The LGBT center will also be available to educate the LGBT community about the importance of planning ahead for future long term care needs.” The national resource center will be funded with a single grant at approximately $250,000 per year, pending availability of funds, said HHS. Michael Adams, executive director of Services and Advocacy for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Elders (SAGE) hailed the announcement in a statement. “This resource center is a truly historic recognition of the needs of LGBT older adults across the country community and will make a huge difference in the lives of so many seniors," said Adams. "For too long, programs that serve LGBT older people have been ignored and shut out from most public funding, and there has been no federal funding to help mainstream aging services become educated about and sensitive to the unique needs of LGBT older adults. With this announcement, the Department of Health and Human Services and Obama Administration have taken a big step in the right direction to correct that wrong as a matter of both policy and funding," he said. >>>http://www.advocate.com/News/Daily_News/2009/10/22/Government_Creates_Resource_for_LGBT_Elders/ |

Sounds like a pat on the head from Obama to gays/lesbians to distract from his failures to live up to campaign promises. Reckon it'll work?

President Obama has served approximately 8 months of his 4 year term and I can't imagine any president being able to fulfill all his campaign promises within the first year.
Today he will sign the new Hate Crimes Prevention Legislation which is one of those campaign promises. With 3 years and 4 months left, I'm willing to bet the President will fulfill many of his other promises, just got to give him time. |

Oh, I meant NOT to imply that he hasn't TRIED to live up to campaign promises; on the contrary. He promised to fundamentally change America through the redistribution of our wealth, and he's dedicated to do so....even if it kills us! |

Wow - you really have trouble maintaining focus on a single topic, don't you? Grasping at random unrelated arguments is a sign of sloppy thinking and an inability to provide anything actually relevant to the topic. This forum is about Gay/Lesbian issues - hence the name. |

I have confidence that IF....you study real hard, you'll see that I was posting to the post of another. Perhaps you, too....can learn to walk and chew gum at the same time. |

Now, now, Kathy.... Either go with your first premise that President Obama has failed to live up to his campaign promises to the LGBT community and he's just patting us on the head and throwing a few crumbs in our direction - or prove that he didn't just sign the Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes Bill yesterday (smile). Redistribution of our wealth is taking the topic in a totally different direction that is unrelated to the gay issue. Please, I beg of you, try and stay somewhere NEAR the topic. |

OK, so then we're ALL happy with his promised obligation to gay/lesbian people now and he can forget about anything beyond the hate crimes bill. That's probably what'll happen, anyway! |

I know your impatient for our newly elected President to enact all his campaign promises; we all are. Patience is a virtue that we wise old codgers have learned to appreciate, so trust me when I tell you there's gonna be more promises kept in the near future. We're gonna have a Gay-Ole-Time next year!!! |

Of course you were responding to another - but his post was on topic, at least in part. Yours, in both of the threads I quoted, were not. See the difference? Or do you need more assistance? |

NO, the post you've highlighted here WAS the one intended. |
