sbird, on the surface I would agree with you somewhat. The complaint I have is that there are many benefiets associated with marriage/recognized unions and I feel that as long as the government is providing tax breaks and such for couples, everyone should have an equal shot at getting their break, with the person of their choice. However, I still want the government out of the marriage business entirely, then I wouldn't care one way or the other as a union would simply be a recognized state of cohabitation with not government benefiets at all, which would suit me just fine. Besides, since when has equality been achieved by the ballot box?...

I agree with this opinion. I think we tend to over reach when we insist on 'marriage' as opposed to civil union. The score is 31 - 0 when submitted to a vote by the people....against gay marriage.
