Is anyone having trouble with USAA recognizing valid same-sex marriages? If so, please respond with your story.

USAA refuses to change my husband's status from "cohabitant" to "spouse" and refuses to upgrade his membership from associate to full. USAA continues citing excuses like required system changes, small number of USAA members in same-sex marriages, local regulations, etc. To their credit however, they've extended insurance to him and allowed joint accounts.

You're referring to the United Services Automobile Association, right? The insurance company? It's a private financial company who answers only to its membership.

Did you receive a communique from the company stating they were going to grant "spouse" status and then they did not?

Under Free Market rules you can change companies, you know...

If you are in California you may be able to force the issue. You may want to check with one of the Legal clinics that support the gay/lesbian/transgendered community. Check the phone listing for San Francisco, or LA for a legal clinic friendly to the community.

If you are not in Cali, I am not sure what to suggest.
