I've been told military members are alowed to carry there own personal sidearm if they have a commanding officer O-6 or above sign them off on it.

Is this true?

This question has been addressed, on this forum, about a dozen times.

NO, you are not authorized to carry your own sidearm.

Nope, as said before GO#1 covers the use, possession, sale, purchase, etc. of personally owned, captured, and seized weapons, explosives, ammunition, etc. Whoever ever told you that was full of it.

GO #1 covers this. A blind eye is often turned to "battlefield recovered" weapons used downrange. People get in big trouble when they try to bring that crap home. I have heard of pistols being snuck into theater, and smart guys "unloading" them during RIP, eliminating the problem of sneaking them back. Be careful, dont do something your career cant handle.

I was a Marine in vietnam in 1966-67. We had 2 enlisted caught with personal weapons, a 25 auto and a colt lite weight commander 45. Both got an article 15 and lost a stripe.
