Hello, my major is Electrical Engineering and currently im a Junior schedueling to graduate the winter quarter of 2009. I am thinking about joining either AF or the Army ROTC program. I have checked out the Army ROTC website but found that jobs offered in the Army has nothing to do with my field of study. The closest i can find is construction engineer but thats more like a hands on civil no?. Does the AF have officer jobs specifically on electrical engineering or something similar? Currenly i am also an E-4 Army Reservist.
Jobs in the AF that would relate to that would most likely be in the research and development areas. Avoid AFROTC though. Unless they are giving you a scholarship (and don't count on it until the money is in the bank) AFROTC is a waste of time. OTS is a much better option. Focus on your schooling while you are at school then focus on officer training during those 10 weeks. Don't try to to both at the same time. Might as well double major if you are going to do that. Plus the attitude of the AF can change while you are in ROTC. In my case I was "force shaped" (along with several others from my det) 1 1/2 months before I was supposed to commission and forced to go enlisted now.
Although I have had many of my classmates kicked out for frivilous medical conditions, I have never heard of anything like what 4084613 has described. Being an electrical engineer, you'll be immune to any force shaping since ee is one of the most needed career field. Being a ME, I have not had many problems concentrating on my degree, AFROTC does not require that many hours. I would however highly reccommend attending a host school, not a crosstown.
As far as Army or AF. Air Force, without a doubt is going to provided more options to use your degree. My det had 7 EE graduate this past year, and everyone of them got assigned to electrical.
