Out of curiosity, can cadets request for a reserve slot instead of active duty before commissioning? I know some other services do it, just wondering if the Air Force does as well.

Normally no. In some years (depending on if the numbers needed don't line up) they might offer reserve opportunities but as a rule the only path is Active Duty for AFROTC.
