I am currently a Criminal Justice student at my local Comm. college. Next year i will be transfering to UMD (AFROTC Det. 330) to finish my last 3 years. mI e-mailed the Det. about in college scholarships, and he said I could not apply unless I was is AFROTC classes my freshman year. He said this was because the Det. puts me in a pool of applicants and w/out prior knowledge of me they are not going to put me in that pool. Anyone have any understanding of this, it is completly beyond my comprehension?

Always,
Mike

Yes. You cannot be considered for an in-college scholarship unless you are in college and attending AFROTC classes. I'd double check the "freshman year" part. That seems to impy if you transfer then you would never be eligible for scholarship as you did your freshman year already.

No "freshman" was used in my specific instance, going for the scholarship for my sophomore year.

So even if I am in the AFROTC classes my Sophomore year I still cant get the scholarship. I mean I'm going AFROTC either direction, but the scholarship would be a huge help.

In any event some form of scholarship would kick in for your remaining 2 years once you do field training and go on contract.

it is not a "scholarship" but a stipend. As an AS300 under contract you'll get 350/month the I think it goes to 450, but no scholarship. If you are goint in as a dual enrolled cadet (taking 100 and 200 year together) then you can be eligible for the In College Scholarship. Your best bet is to call the Unit Admission Officer at the Det. you are going to be joining. They can tell you more for sure.

MAc,

Even at 2 in the morning you can get info. See http://www.afrotc.com/scholarships/incolschol/incolProgram.php

Vandal is correct. The $$ I was referring to is considered a stipend vs a scholarship. To a starving college student I doubt the name makes a difference as it's still money to help pay for rent, books, tuition and luxuries such as food.

OK Update Time.

Called my Det. today and this is what happened.

Late Feb. early March I call and schedual an interveiw. The interview is so they can "rank" me against everyone else. Then I have to take the AFOQT. They might have me do a PT test also, they decided that when they see me. After they rank me I will be in the pool. Early Aug. I will find out if I got it or not. Then I take 100 & 200 together and live like every other Cadet.

I "look" 5' 10" 135 lbs. So skinny but healthy. Right now my #'s would be alright, but I have a fitness plan I am starting so by then my #'s will be great.
