yes you will be able to call home, how often is another thing. When I went through basic we called home 3 times. It will be up to your DI as to when you can call.

When I went to BCT at Ft. Benning (Mar 07) I got the opportunity to use the payphone once during Reception (at 30th AG). Once I was in my training platoon, we got to use the payphones each Sunday for anywhere from 7-15 minutes.
Remember to try out and buy phone cards BEFORE you ship to BCT. Some cards make you listen to lengthy instructions or promotions, which eats up your minutes. Some charge extra time for using a payphone, which you MUST use. Find all this out beforehand. Then once you find a good card, buy enough to last you the whole time.
The PX sells phonecards, but they tend to be a little more pricey than ones you might be able to find on your own. Also, you may not be able to get to the PX regularly.
Your main line of communication will be letters and postcards. Getting mail each night is a morale booster.
