I retired in 2003. If you wanted a copy of your medical record you had to make it yourself. I think the smart folk just kept the original upon retirement. I sure did.
Common sense tells me that whomever set the policy that prohibits you from copying the med record should be responsible for providing you a copy (or delegating that task). Good luck!!

Said who? It is YOUR record. When I retired I took my copies AND my ORIGINAL.. It means a lot more to me than it does to anyone in the CG or the storage place it would be sent to. I am responsible for it's safe guarding.. Not some person that could care less about MY record.
If you go to a doctor's appointment take your record and make a copy of it.. who would know?
Maybe it was the strange situation I was in when they put me on TDRL but I wasn't given ANYTHING when I was pushed out. I think my records were at district office and I was stationed at the USPHS Hospital It was a weird deal.
When I retired I sat at the copier and made two copies of my med record. It was encouraged. I did it myself cuz if I waited for someone else to do it it may not ever have gotten done.

Ex_CG_GM,
Did they have copy machines back then or carbon paper?
JekelKat13,
My corpseman gave me my record one day and said make as many copies as you want. Then he certified them all. I'm also a fan of taking your original medical record with your copies.
Wray, ill bet you a bacardi vs capt morgan that burried in the bowels of either the persman or medman it does state that the medical record is property of the govt. Wanna bet? Bill
The medical facility administrator (read: HSC) is telling me (well... telling someone to tell me) that the member is not allowed to make a copy because they "have to be watched" and they don't "have the personnel" for it.
Bill, First off... I can drink Bacardi as well as the Captain..
Second off, if memory serves me corectly it says that on the outside cover of your medical record.
I have mine, you have yours.. Oh well... ;-)
I think one of the big "myth's" is that you have to have a "certified" copy for the VA... No one has EVER asked me for ANYTHING to be "Certified as a true copy"..

Just tell them you are going to a doctor when you get out and he/she wants to see a copy of your records.. If the HSC wont do it, go up the chain.. to the CO if necessary.. You will get a copy.
That's the thing. I'm already out! My end-of-enlistment was mid-Aug. I requested a copy of my record in the beginning of July and was told yesterday the whole "wait" B.S.
Well... I had to use my *ahem* Alpha personality. I was told that I'll have my copy in 2 weeks. Keep your fingers crossed for me. I don't want to have to open a can of "CO appointment"
I had to call medical a few times and then I just showed up and waited in the waiting room until it was copied. I then went to kinkos and meade two more copies. Your Vet service officer will take one. And you one to take with you for your C & P physical. Also if you are tricare prime remote, get all of your med record copies from the civilian doc. and put them together in your cg file. This is the most important file you have for VA compensation. Remember, after you're out, you are no longer part of the family.

I'll bet your right...Means I stole government property...If they want it, they can have it...But first they have to get through all the Nortenos and Surenos in Modesto to get it...If they do get through those guys, then they have to get past the Meth heads...(They'll steal them blind)...After all that, if they knock on my door, I'll give 'em back their health record and throw in a few "government pens"...

Yeah I've noticed that. There are only few that still keep in touch with me since I've gotten out. I guess I expected that to happen. I don't like it - but I expected it.
I'll have to go around to all the civilian docs. We were referred out a lot. Dentist, "Girl" doctor, PT, MRI's, everything really, except the CG physical, regular illnesses (e.g., cold) and (some) medications.

Gunk,
Those pens are real important! My car was "random" searched when going shopping at a Navy commissary. They confisted a single government pen found in the glove box between the front seats. The incident was reported to my command. I was called in to the XO's office, who started to chew me out, but had to give up because he couldn't keep from laughing about the whole event.
Heck, had they caught me on a different day they might have found a bunch of MSO gear in my car. I kept it there when I was on duty doing pollution investigations. If the call was closer to my house, I would sometimes use my own car to go to the scene, vice going into the station to get a government car.
