I know this question has probably been raised a thousand times, but can anyone tell me how VA disability ratings are determined? I have seriously started to contemplate retirement, and this has always been a mysterious topic to me.

Thanks

How they actually do it is a mystery to all of us, but they are supposed to go by this book.

Before you retire find out about combined retirement-VA disability physical. It was offered at a few select locations, might still be, but it seemed to be a state secret where and how. The difference is I have been waiting two years for my claim to get processed, and Wray had his approved at the time he retired.

Check out a TAPS class. If possable go to one sponsered by the Air Force. Also go talk to your local VA rep. Another way to go is DAV.God luck.

Darrell:
Not quite sure where you are at but there is an excellent Retirement TAPS called RETAPS at MCAS Miramar. They have DAV reps that will go through your Medical Record with you and help you file a claim. They also have an outstanding working relationship with the San Diego VA. You can take your VA physical up to 180 days out from retirement so anything they find they cannot deny. I highly recommend this class but I am sure others would recommend the classes they took. My advice is take as many as you can it certainly doesn’t hurt and all the information you get will certainly help you make your decision.
