I recently requested a copy of my DD-214 from the national archives. For what ever reason they sent them to coast guard personnel center (adm-3). They gave me the name of the person that would receive my dd-214 and stated that she would also get a copy of my request.
Well I contacted this person and got the impression she was to busy and gets to many files to concern herself with my needs. What can I do to get a copy of my dd-214?

Call back and ask for the person in charge or supervisor of that department.

To obtain or amend a copy of your military service record and/or your Official Military Personnel File (DD-214, OMPFs), please visit the website for the Military Personnel Records Center (MPRC) in St. Louis, which is part of the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA). If you have been discharged from military service, your personnel files are stored at NARA, the official repository for records of military personnel who have been discharged from the U.S. Air Force, Army, Marine Corps, Navy and Coast Guard. To get to the NARA Web site, you will need to leave the VA website and go to "www.archives.gov/veterans/military-service-records/" "www.archives.gov/vetera...ary-service-records/" This site gives instructions to submit a SF 180 - Request Pertaining to Military Records. It also has links for: Personnel Files (OMPFs) Request Service Records or Proof of Military Service Locations of Military Service Records Medical and Health Records Correcting Service Records and Discharges Replacement Medals and Awards Military Service Records at the National Personnel Records Center's Archival Research Room NARA has an online document request service called eVetRecs which allows you to Request Copies of Military Personnel Records online. This system provides a customized order form to request information from your, or your relative's, military personnel records. To utilize this system, you will need to leave the VA website and go to: "www.archives.gov/veterans/evetrecs/index.html - [url=http://www.archives.gov/veterans/evetrecs/index.html] "www.archives.gov/veterans/evetrecs/index.html" Questions about your military records may also be sent to: National Personnel Records Center Military Personnel Records Center 9700 Page Boulevard St. Louis, MO 63132-5100

-----------------------------------------------

I work at the Veterans Administration. I believe we have a form to send off to get your DD 214. If you send me a fax or mailing address I will see if we do and mail you one.

it's gonna take awhile so in the mean time, what happened to yours?

when you are discharged or retired, you were given an original and 1 or 2 copies with original signatures. the rest were dessiminated to the cg personnel center, NPSC st louis, the va etc.

before retiring as a YN1, i would always make extra copies for people.

the dd-214 is the most important document in your CG career. you need it for va benefits, hiring preferences.

on the day i retired, i made many copies of MY DD-214. i registered it with the county , gave a copy when i applied for va, and gave copies to my family members for safe keeping as well.
in june 2006 i had a massive stroke. if it was not for me having a copy of my dd-214, it made my transfer to the va medical center that much easier, whereas you would have gone through red tape without it.

please dont think i'm being hard on you. it was my job to make sure you have your copies and was instructed on how to use them. i have had many times where people would call me requesting them. as for getting them from (adm-3),

poor planning on your part does not constitute and emergency on ours.

Chris,
I get the feeling this guy was in for only 4 years.. He probably has misplaced his DD-214.. I don't consider him asking how to get a replacement an "EMERGENCY".. just a general question. I certainly don't mind helping him out.

12787873 ---> If you want, e-mail me --> littleredvet@earthlink.net (yes I have one)... Tomorrow I will look for that form I was telling you about.

Do a google search for SF Form 180, and it will take you to the proper form to download and print.

Why your records are at a location, other than the national records center is a puzzle. How long since your discharge?

I got my copy today from the coast guard admin, I guess I got a little edgey.
Well when I got divorced a few years back my ex got rid of everything when I was out of state, I mean everthing. So thats how I lost my original. I had a great job come open but they needed my dd-214 to verify my vet status so I kind of needed it asap. Thanks for the help.

12787873 ---> Now that you have it, make a dozen copies of it and put them in a few different safe & secure locations.
