From the New York Daily Times, an article that says most pet owners say they can.

When my cat Scootie feels there is real danger, he growls like a dog. When he wants to go out, he makes a very loud thump when he jumps off the bed. When he's outdoors and wants in, he "throws" his voice so I can hear it better. He can do this with a mouse in his mouth, but it's more muffled. When he wants something he will stare me down until I do something, like follow him or feed him. He used to bite me when he wanted to be fed.

Most of the stuff my cats do repeatedly is really weird and I have no idea what it means. BeeBee's big deal is petting her while she eats. Why this is so important to her, I have no clue, but she will not give up until I do. Also she thinks it is her responsibility to stay with me if I'm in the bathroom.

Live simply. Love generously.
Care deeply. Speak kindly.
Leave the rest to God.

I'm freakin' crippled now.

My butt-knuckle is killing me.

Bones, the cat, has certain noises that he makes that I understand.
His: I'm lonely and am looking for a female hopefully. It's a gawd-awful yeowling that starts as a meow. It progresses to this throaty call that gets louder and louder until someone tells him to shut up. Does mostly at night.
His: hi, it's 10-11 pm at night, you're awake and I'm awake let's chat meows. The ones where I say 'hi Bones' and he meows this pitiful meow back.
His: hey the food dish is empty meow.
And let's not forget: don't touch me child meow. Wink

Tango, our pooch, she answers everything. If you have something she wants and you tell her 'say please' she does a little yelp to a large Shepard bark.
She has her: someone's walking across my yard and/or someone's at the door bark. Another deep Shepard bark.
She has her: Daddy's home! bark.....this could be for anyone, but she really loves her Daddy. Big Grin
As far as whimpers....Tango doesn't do that unless she REALLY has to go potty or she's in a room and she wants out.

Princess is terrible. She has this whine that is ONLY for matt. As soon as the car pulls up she starts in with it and doesn't stop until he has given her just enough attention.

She doesn't speak this one, but when she wants out, she will be all up in your face. If you happen to be leaned back in the recliner, she will climb up the back of it onto your face until you let her out.

She has a bark for "yes I want that treat". It is very quiet and almost like she is saying please. She has one for when someone she doesn't know has pulled into the parking lot and she has one for people she does know. She has a different one for kids who walk by the yard. I think on that one she is asking them to play. haha.

She has one for when one of the kids has one of her toys and wants them to throw it. She is just nuts. haha.

Our german sheppards had different ones also, but ALL of our dogs have had the same annoying whine for when Matt gets home. And they have all learned the sounds of our cars.

Lacy comes when she's called. Neela(aka Damn cat) puts us on voicemail.Oh yeah, Lacy talks in her sleep if Lois and I aren't in bed. She will curl up on the pillow if Lois or I get up to go to the can so it is warm when we get back.
Lacy likes to give Lois "Wet Willies" with her nose when she is asleep. Now that's funny an I don't care who ya are! Big Grin

Apache makes a sound like he's yawning whenever he needs to go out to the bathroom.

Wish I could tell what he's saying when he barks in his sleep. I think it's a riot to listen to him do that and wonder what the heck he's dreaming about. Big Grin

Don

P.S. I can translate one particular bark. See that toy next to him in the photo. When I am teasing him by squeaking it and hiding it behind my leg, he'll let out a mean and frustrated bark that means, "Give me my F#@$ing toy, NOW!" Mad

Big Grin

Bet Barry would know, but I am a dummy.

Did you know that cats love to "show off"?
Mommycat doesn't participate, but Scoooterr, BeeBee cat, and Mavis Ann, go out into the back yard for a romp. I stand at the back door and agg them on. The more I holler, they more they love it.

They have must great hearing, because I'm behind the glass door (not out in the bitter cold), hollering stuff like "Sic sic!!! Git 'er, BeeBee!" Then BB and Mavis LEAP into the air, and "attack" each other. It's a brief attack, after which they jump sideways at each other, and maybe chase each other around the yard, or run up the trees. Scoooterrr joins in, but he's getting old, and his bursts of strength are short lived. I think they fear him, though. He doesn't forgive readily.

The character of Aslan is a representation of the Christ. I read the books in college.
Don, My Aussie Border Collie yips and yaps in her sleep, but only when just Lois or I are in bed sleeping. Lois thinks that if we are both sleeping we keep her awake turning.

When my dog Pete shoves his cold nose in my face at 2am and runs away it means "I need to pee! Hurry!" But when I get a cold nose to the face and a head thumping on the bed its "Can I hop up?"
When he stares at us its "I have to go potty" unless we have food then he is mooching and when he runs around to everyone at 4:30-5:00 he wants dinner.

I understand most things about dawgs.

Thier body language and noises they make are learned behavior.

Working Dawgs most of my life I have found that anyone can read thier pets if they spend time with them just as you would any person. Sounds strange I know.

I met a Dawg once that knew 40 to 50 words. He was an Air Force dawg that did demo's.It was amazing.

My Dawg has three different barks. One if something is around and he don't like it. Another for when animals are around. And last If a human is around. All different.

My neighbor's dog loves me to pieces! Every time she sees me, she comes running (so much for the "leash law" in our town Big Grin ). She puts her paws on my hips and starts going "Aaaroooo, aroooo" like we are the bestest of friends, just having a chat. Trouble is, she's so doggone loud you can't hear yourself think.
She will "talk" to me as long as I will put up with it.

Wikihow has an article on how to communicate with your cat! "http://www.wikihow.com/Communicate-with-Your-Cat"

Maybe you were already familiar with these?
quote:
Short meow - standard greeting.

Multiple meows - excited greeting.

Mid-pitch meow - plea for something.

Drawn-out mrrroooow - a demand for something.

Low pitch MRRRooooowww - a complaint

High-pitch RRRROWW! - anger or pain.

Chatter (rapid teeth-chattering jaw movements) - excitement, frustration (e.g. when prey is out of reach or escapes)

Chirrup (Also called "chirring", a cross between a meow and a purr with rising inflection) - friendly greeting sound, often used by a mother cat to call to her kittens.

Purr - invites close contact or attention

But did you know the meaning of cat body language??

quote:

tail straight up or straight up with a curl at the end - happy

tail twitching - excited or anxious

slowly blinking eyes - affection, equivalent of "blowing a kiss"

Rubbing against you means they are marking you as their own

sustained eye contact is interpreted as being assertive or even aggressive and makes cats uncomfortable; slow blinking communicates trust

wet nose "kiss" - an affectionate gesture when the cat taps its wet nose to you

ears back - alarmed or in a very playful mood, also used when sniffing something they want to know more about

rubbing head, flank and tail against a person or animal - greeting ritual

head-butting - friendliness, affection [my cat does this!]

face sniffing - confirming identity

ears back and flattened - fearful, anxious or VERY playful (be careful here)

licks you - this could be the ULTIMATE sign of affection.
If your cat licks you, your cat may consider you to be a part of his/her family, like a mother cleaning her kittens. If you push your cat away when he/she licks you, they may feel hurt and confused. Your kitty loves you! Or this could mean you have something tasty on your hand!

And there's also a good one for communicating with your dog too:
"http://www.wikihow.com/Communicate-With-Your-Dog" which is a longer read, so I won't try to cut and paste here.

I think cat language can be passed on!

Mavis Ann is the baby of the family. She has started emulating whatever Sccoootteerr does to get the desired action from me. She has learned to jump on the bed with me... but run away and "thunk!" down hard on the floor, to let me know she wants out.

She copies things that BeeBee does too. But thank goodness she doesn't copy Mommycat. Mommycat is as close to wild as any cat I have ever known. MC still growls over her food, though I feed her well. So Mommycat's kids are much tamer than she is, easier to love.
