Hey there, I recently applied to take a EMT course at a local community college. This course is for credit from an accredited college that I have used TA at in the past.
My request for EMT funding was rejected due to it being a "vocational" course and the Institute said it was not appropriate to be funded. What gets me is that most of the jobs the USCG gives us are vocational in training. They are trade jobs, such as diesel mechanics and health clinic technicians.
I am looking to broaden my skill sets to allow for the continued upsets in the economy. Does anyone know what types of vocational training are allowed for funding through the USCG?
My OinC/ESO said that she didn't think that my EMT course would be approved so she sent in a help ticket prior to submitting my TA app to find out. Since I'm using the course as a prereq for grad school (to gain patient contact hours) they told her it would be approved. So now I just have to see if that holds water and I get my actual TA approval.
hazleyes81, Good luck with that. I wrote the USCG Institute directly asking about my request. I am not sure why it was rejected. I can try to resubmit it and change it from vocational training to an AA degree.
From what I have been told in the past, vocational programs need to be related to your specific rate in order to be funded by TA. EMT is technically related to everyones rate if you think about it. If you can articulate that to the ESO, I would say you have a shot a getting that approved.

Yeah, PA. I've tried to get into the CG EMT course at both units I've been at and have been unsuccessful, so now I figure I'll just take it into my own hands. If TA doesn't cover it, I'll just pay out of pocket. What's $600 more when I've already paid over 2k out of pocket this year?
Not sure if were directing the second half of the question towards me, but I was looking to attend a local community college. The class was five credits over a semester and prepares you to take the national test.

About the EMT program - are you looking at one through a local community college? Or one that is solely a vocational program??
I've been debating about competing for the CG program or just getting out and trying for civilian schools. I have my BS already and only need Chem II (which I'll take this spring) to meet all the prereqs. I just retook the SAT last week so I should find out in a couple of weeks how I did on it.
The EMT class is a 5 credit course at a community college near me. I still haven't heard anything from the institute (as of yesterday morning).

I got denied TA for Diesel technician school as an MK but I think it depends on how much TA is being used because I remember the ESO's that I spoke with said people have gotten into techical programs in the past..
For all, TA policy is that "C" Clock Hour credits are not authorized for any circumstance. If you are attending a qualifying degree program and EMT is part of the requirements for that degree and the program is quarter hour or semester hour based then it may be authorized. Vocational/Technical EMT courses that only earn contact/clock hour courses are not authorized. In order for a course to be authorized, you must earn transferable college credit, a letter grade (not a certificate of completion), and the course MUST be semester or quarter hour based.
To the member who stated they would just change the information in order to get TA. Remember that is falsifying information and knowingly attempting to defraud the Goverment and Tax Payers of money. In short it is stealing. I do not recommend it, if caught, punishment could be as small as having to repay the amount authorized or full court martial as per UCMJ policy.
