I was just made aware of this by my wife and found it quite interesting. The details are a bit unclear but it's looking like those of us who will not utilize the GI bill may be able to pass a portion of it off to a designated dependant pretty soon! Good for me with a 14 year old girl. Stand by for more info, but it looks good. Thanks W! Applause

So my question is; Will I get my $1200 back that was taken out of my paycheck for the Montgomery GI Bill if I switch to the Post 9/11 GI Bill?

Good question, but I doubt it, I'm sure it will be up to the member if they want to switch to the new plan. Stay tuned and engage the Pers when more info comes out.

Almost sounds too good to be true. Wouldn't something like this make it hard to retain personnel? I will get out in a heart beat when my enlistemnt is up if I can have my school paid for, plus receive the monthly housing stipend! I was more than likely getting out anyways, but this just makes it so much easier to decide.

And I am mainly talking about more junior personnel. Obviously someone who has over 10 years in wouldn't just get out so they could receive a little extra money for a few years when it would cost them there retirement.

Yeah I was reading up on this and it sounds like a great plan, being able to pass it to a dependent and all. Me being only a third class with a wife who is going to college is pretty hard on the wallet and if this passes and it is true that you can pass it off to your dependent please let me know.

Bluetorch,
I downloaded the new defense spending authorization that the new Post 9-11 Veterans' Educational Assistance Program (S.22) is included in. According to the legislature you will receive the $1200 back if you go beyond your new fund's limit. We should be expecting presidential approval on this within the next week. Hopefully the VA has the rules made public by the start of the new fiscal year.

Some good info is filtering out, I've read about 4 year and 10 year rules for passing on benefits to dependants and spouses.

Anyone know if the E-5 BAH "stipend" will be taxable, or will is also be an allowance like active duty?

Doubtful. DOD offers numerous bribes for college money and not that many bail. With a lot of programs out there, many folks can get their degrees while in the service, before the intitial military obligation is done with. Not to mention, MANY folks are coming in undergrad, grad and post grad degrees, in Cape May.

Roger that, Master Chief. I guess the housing stipend part got me all excitedSmile Probably because I was contemplating getting out in a couple years and using the GI Bill, so this just sounds like a great deal for me if I were to chose to use it.

mgib.gov has a pamphlet which they published yesterday on their website. Kind of general, but it does put some good, reliable info out there. Might want to take a look.

Looks like the Coast Guard will decide how or if the transfer of entitlement will happen. I starting to get that funny feeling in my gut. Roll Eyes

ESOs,

In an effort to manage information in a controlled manner and also minimize a slue of queries that may be premature in all regards we felt compelled to address the following as you may be inundated with questions from your respective AORs:

There has been a frenzy of activity today within the military community due to the passage of the new GI Bill, which is being called the "GI Bill for the 21st Century" on Military.com. Additional information about this bill can be found at http://www.gibill.va.gov/.

"The Post-9/11 GI Bill is a new benefit providing educational assistance to individuals who have served on active duty on or after September 11, 2001." Several critical points of fact include; (1) an effective date of August 1, 2009 and (2) does not cover any education/training completed before this effective date.

One of the statements/elements of the new legislation that is generating interest is the transfer of entitlement/benefit to dependents. The new VA Brochure states, "You must be approved by the Department of Defense (DoD) for eligibility to transfer entitlement to your spouse and/or dependent children. Please contact (DoD) or your military service for more information."

Please understand that Coast Policy must be promulgated as it applies to all aspects of this fantastic benefit and that HQ will be formulating that directive, sometime soon. In addition, it is fair to state that significant effort will be applied to appropriately explain all elements of this benefit and especially the language that applies to dependents.

As many of us have been aware that this initiative has been extraordinarily supported throughout the country it must also be added/included to the current and complicated effort of discerning the educational benefits as it applies to our invaluable reserve program.

A special THANK YOU to Dr. Kathy Nash (MLC-LANT ESO Program Manager) for providing significant effort in highlighting this information!

This was the reply I got,.
