Hello, I have heard that "double-dipping" is illegal. Although, I have heard that people do it. They are released from active duty, join the reserves and use TA but also live off their GI BILL? Is this possible? Thanks.
Usually, "double dipping" for education benefits refers to receiving State and Federal benefits simultaneously. For instance, you went active duty for a few years and elected to take the G.I. Bill. At the end of your enlistment, you elect to enter a State Militia or National Guard...usually Army or Air Force. They offer incentives for service in addition to your previous active duty entitlements.
"Double-Dipping" is not illegal if you know what the rules are and follow the established guidelines. Adhereing to the policies is not illegal.
ELWEPO is stating the truth. Top-up is legal and within guidelines. Some states offer free or reduced educational benefits for veterans. Also, they are numerous colleges to obtain a degree using TA alone. Generally, top-up is used to get graduate degrees. Futhermore, you do not get your full monthly entitlement. You only receive the exact amount that the TA does not cover. Like ELWEPO said, talk to your ESO.
I understand what TOP-UP is. I just heard of people using TA for their tuition (reserves) and using their full monthly entitlement to live off of ($1200). I'm sure there are ways around to doing this, but how common is it?
I use TA to pay for my tuition, and I have the MGIB pays me monthly. Since I don't go full time I only get 3/4 benefits. If I was full time MGIB would be 1200. Plus MGIB will pay for a tutor through the school.
