I was tempted, almost traded in an '88 F-150, uglier and quirkier even than you might imagine. But, she's a good ol' girl, and couldn't bring myself to see her euthanized. The idea of going some thousands of dollars deeper in debt didn't seem like such a good idea, either. Glad I came to my senses.

I wonder how many of those Cash For Clunkers new cars will end up being reposessed? Probably be some bargains on late model used cars in a year or two.

Same here. My wife and I talked about it, but didn't want the extra truck payment. We also talked about waiting for the repos. Applause

I hope those folks know that they must pay taxes on the 'free' $4,500!

Oh, and I didn't even consider it. My truck with over 100,000 miles is in too good shape to remove its Hemi and trash it!

Yep... that and it was on sale when I ought it! It is difficult to put an ATV in the back of a Prius! ANd, since I hunt on New York and need my ATV to hunt, my truck was necessary.

But of course, I could be compensating! Big Grin

I actually went the opposite way with it. I kept my car and went out and bought a 20 year old, gas guzzling jeep to toy around with.

Did you get the parts you were looking for earlier this summer Kev?

Wow...that's a little surprising no one did it. I don't own anything I'd consider a clunker.

Good call on the clunker repo's. I hope someone will track that. I could see that as an unintended (maybe unintended??) consequence. Now watch some clown(s) who jumped on the deal come back and sue the govt because they can't make the payments or went further in debt.

I don't think they do because the $4,500 is put up by the dealerships and then they get reimbursed by the government. Or do you mean the taxes on the car?

Yeah, I ended up finding a place. The first few places I called told me that they wouldn't sell any parts for old cars that fell under the cash for clunkers program. I mean, it's a JUNKYARD! If you don't sell parts for old crappy cars, what DO you sell? It just didn't make any sense to me.

I did, but it didn't get any Obama bumper stickers off the road, it got a herd of Deadhead stickers and one Ominous Seapods sticker off the road.

This boondoggle was one of the biggest wastes of taxpayer dollars ever imagined. But I figure as long as my money is being thrown away, they might as well throw some to me.

I was going to buy a new vehicle anyway, the old F-Barge had over 215,000 miles on it and downhill with a tailwind might get 16.5mpg.

Yeah, sort of. You pay the sales tax based on the total price of the car, and then the $4,500 comes off that price, but it's not like you are going to pay income tax on this money as some scaremongers have claimed (none on this forum that I've seen).

No repos and no payments for me, the only thing I finance is my house, and then only for three years.

(applause)

That last line of worthy of applause and cheers. Debt is the curse of our economic system, and I'm not innocent in the matter. Way to go RW!

"Resolve not to be poor; whatever you have, spend less. Poverty is a great enemy to human happiness; it certainly destroys liberty, and it makes some virtues impracticable, and others extremely difficult"

(Dr. Samuel Johnson, another guy you didn't learn about in your government run school.)

Yep, my boss got one, actually more of a electric mini pickup truck, for approxiametly free. Steet legal, but max speed is about 30, so he can't take it out on the highway in front of his house. So he's got no use for it, but he figured he paid enough taxes that if the government was gonna give him a "free" $10,000 toy, he'd take it.

Your tax dollars at work.

An E-mail I received from a friend:

I must be really stupid. Here is the "Cash for Clunkers" plan as I understand it. A vehicle at 15 mpg and 12,000 miles per year uses 800 gallons a year of gasoline. A vehicle at 25 mpg and 12,000 miles per year uses 480 gallons a year.

So, the average "Cash for Clunkers" transaction will reduce US gasoline consumption per vehicle by 320 gallons per year. They claim 700,000 vehicles, so that's 224 million gallons / year. That equates to a bit over 5 million barrels of oil. 5 million barrels of oil is about a quarter of one day's US consumption. And, 5 million barrels of oil costs about $350 million dollars at $70/bbl. So, we all consented to spending $3 billion to save $350 million.

How good a deal was that ???

If that doesn't scare you enough, remember that these are the same folks who will soon control your health care.

Just wait until these people that took the $4500 find out that they must pay taxes on that extra $4500 income! I can't wait to hear the whining! Angel/Devil
