Pat, a SINGLE ice cube. Just one! But, as usual, you are right. I wasn't thinking. So, as punishment, I'll recite 30 Hail Obama's. Wink

A contrary opinion:

quote:
Place about two ounces of single malt in a 12 oz. brandy snifter.

Swirl the contents three or four times.

Place the nose about twelve inches above the rim of the glass and sniff lightly as you slowly move your nose closer or farther from the rim of the glass.

Swirl the whisky again and smell again.

Now that you have found the "correct" distance for YOUR nose and THIS particular single malt, place about a half-teaspoon of good quality, room temperature water in the single malt. I keep a bottle of such in my single malt cabinet. Now quickly swirl the contents a couple of times and nose again. If the whisky has much character, you will now most likely have to move your glass farther from your nose. There may be an intense release of aromas from the malt- or maybe not so intense. This robust release of aromas is due to the old Chemistry 104 term called "heat of solution." In effect, this rule states that when two chemicals are mixed, they may "take on" or "release" energy, thus becoming cooler or warmer. In the case of a whisky and water mix, the solution becomes slightly warmer, thus releasing the ethyl alcohols which contain much of the aroma of the single malt. The "nosing" step of appreciating the single malt is very important. There are 32 primary aromas, but only four primary tastes (via the tongue). Taste is influenced by the sense of smell for more than most people are aware.

I have actually been told by some whiskey officianados that as much as 1/3 room temperature water is appropriate. However, that is up to the whiskey.

I love it when I go to a restaurant and order a great Scotch or Irish neat. They promise they won't spill it. I explain that simply means no ice. Then I ask for room temperature or tap water. They bring back the ice water after fishing out the cubes.

Put cold water in a single malt and watch it cloud up.

Save the water and a cup--drink it straight from the bottle. Big Grin

On the abortion issue, it should be left to the physicians to decide whether or not to perform the procedure. Abortion is an elective procedure, unless the life of the mother is at stake, with a totally preventable cause. Physicians should not be forced to perform the procedure if it is against their personal beliefs nor prevented from performing to patients willing to pay the fee. But, my wife tells me that, as a man, I shouldn't have any say in the matter.

Fair enough. But, do you agree that contraception is the equivalent of abortion?

P.S. I'm actually a Crown Royal man myself. Has anyone tried the XR? Magnificent.

Contraception could be deciding not to have sex at all...The rythum method...

It's the conception itself that begins the process....after conception occurrs a human is reproduced. That is the real choice arena...not choosing to stop something that has already begun. That is a choice, but now that choice is death.

P. S. I switched from scotch to single malt Irish Whiskey some time ago...preferably Bushmills 21...triple distilled. Smooooooothh!

Make sure you mix a little cherry juice in there before mixing with the ice! But whatever you do, don't drive! Even after one drink!! Man, it goes to your head fast!!! When I make them at a party, I take the keys or make sure there is a driver. These things sneak up on you and smack your head!

Hey, Dick, what do your religious beliefs tell you about whether or not contraception should be equated with abortion?

I know a couple of nice girls that choose to get them. Its between them and God or them and thier doctor. I would hate to make that call for them and generally don;t see as I have any rights in the process of whether or not they go through child birth or abort thier baby. Having seen all five of my kids come into the world I'm glad I'm just a coach while in the delivery room. I'm going to hell for wasting a lot of my seed as they say! Cool

You won't hear me argue with that.

But, do you, personally, consider contraception to be the same as abortion?

Actually, in most cases, I'll just settle for a bitterly, hoppy Avery Maharaja or a nice smooth Breckenridge Vanilla Porter.

Except on Thanksgiving, then it's just Crown and ice. Sorry about the ice, Pat.

Fair enough. How would you respond to a Catholic who tells you that you are a murderer because you use contraception?
