Don’t blame the Democrats? Look at what has happened since they took over Congress. The price of gas has gone W-A-Y up! Government spending has gone up. The national debt has gone up. Even though they promised to end it, we still have a war going on. Our dependence upon foreign oil remains extremely high. Due to Democrat policies, we cannot search for our own oil sources to make us more independent. I don’t see any less poor folk. I don’t see any less hungry folks. American children still go to bed hungry.

Kumbyah my (item of choice) Kumbyah! Oh, and political correctness has pretty much eliminated the word 'Lord'.

I was predicting gas needs to get to $6-$8 a gallon before the folks get PO'd enough to do something. Finally I'm seeing signs I "might" be wrong on this. There are several polls out there showing the folks are in support of lifting these oil bans.

IMO.....the Dems and especially the Libs are finding themselves to be on the wrong side of this. Even Sen McCain smelled the winds of change (there's that word again) and flipped on his opposition to the offshore ban. He is still holding on to the ANWR ban but I think he will flip on that too as public approval rises and he educates himself about it. If Sen Obama keeps opposing the drilling and prices hold or keep rising till the election, I predict he will be in trouble. I would speculate he will have to flip on something.

What surprises me about the conversation here is that people actually still believe that there is a difference between Democrat and Republican. There isn't. They are all involved in their own political power games and the good of the country and its citizens is at best secondary.

Matt, I can’t see much of a difference between the Republicans and the Democrats. But there is a large difference between conservatives and liberals.

As long as drilling can be done safely, and in a way not to harm the environment, I say drill away, especially offshore.

My understanding is that whatever we pump here goes to the world oil market so China can buy it. So just how is drilling gonna change that?

AJ, how much of the world do we feed? How much of the world's freedom is defended by our military? So we keep some of our oil… whoopee!

The world needs to give us a break for once. We've been carrying a lot of them for far too long! Maybe Kuwait could send us some gas for protecting their freedom!

So long as oil is treated as a free market commodity, you're just handing over more commodity to the hedge fund managers and commodities traders to play with, I mean, broker. Accordingly, they get richer.

You don't have to nationalize oil ... just recognize it as a national resource for which profit is being drawn by a few. So tax each barrel of oil drawn from US lands. The average price to retrieve a barrel of oil is only about $17 ... so make 'em pay a little for it.

While you're at it, cancel all existing leases and renegotiate.

Rants of the decade:

2003 - This war is about oil!

2008 - Where's my oil?!

Interesting...

So let me get this straight. Some folks complain about government interference in our lives. Those same folks say let's drill for oil domestically and tell the oil companies to keep the oil home and sell it to us cheaper than on the open market. Talk about things that make you go hmmm.

It would take ten years for new drilling to make an impact on oil prices and then it would be minimal.

I'm not too sure about that 10yr thing. I was watching the tube this weekend and some "experts" were saying the "10yr" timeframe is under normal conditions. The time can be decreased with a max effort. I think the person mentioned 6-7 yrs or better.
