RALEIGH, N.C. - Ah, the recliner. The American invention that linked lazing in the living room to television and frozen dinners is one of the few bright spots in a well-worn U.S. household furniture industry.

Sales of reclining chairs are getting a lift from the growing popularity of high-tech TVs, home theater equipment and video games, as well as an aging population that is less active. Even the recession, which forced many Americans to cancel vacation plans, seemed to have help sales of the comfy lounge chairs.

"People think, `I'm not going to travel. Doggone it, when I go home I'm going to be comfortable,'" said Don Hunter, who heads Catnapper, a recliner-focused division of Jackson Furniture Industries in Cleveland, Tenn

$2.3 million in federal stimulus money is going to pay for Tampa Bay area beauty school tuition
By Will Van Sant, Times Staff Writer
In Print: Saturday, October 17, 2009

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Chad Malm, owner of Salon Jack in Tampa, says there are plenty of hairdressers; he gets as many as six applicants a week. Spending stimulus money to train them, he says, doesn’t make sense.
That's swell news for those who see the beauty trades as a way to gain a firmer footing in the job market. But is there truly demand for more beauty school graduates at bay area salons?

Not really, said Monica Ponce, owner of Muse The Salon in Tampa.

"Instead of encouraging more people to go to beauty schools," Ponce said, "they should probably help the stylists who are unemployed."

Some area salons are hiring in this economy, but even industry lobbyists say beauty school is rarely a ticket to a thriving career.

Only 1 to 2 percent of beauty school graduates will be working in the field five years from graduation, said Bonnie Poole, treasurer of the Florida Cosmetology Association.

Maybe selling massage recliners is causing a need for training.

It is. Not sure if it is still on display or not, but it was when Surface Force visited about 23 yrs or so ago now.

I seen it within the last year or so. Right along with a pair of Dorthy's red slippers.

I bought a genuine La-Z-Boy chair from the La-Z-Boy store back in 1994 or 5, still works so I see no need to replace it. But when I do I think I'll get the super-dooper heated chair with massage rollers.

Anyone seen the recliners with the small refrigerated section in the side? Just big enough for a few cans of beer. Not something I'm interested in, I have to get up to return beer twice as often as I have to get up to get a new one anyway.

Archie Bunkers syle of chair was called a Wingback. It's still in the Smithsonian, in a different place now, I saw it in July.

Could be worse.... Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale, a tale of a fateful trip, That started from this tropic port, aboard this tiny ship. The mate was a mighty sailin' man, the Skipper brave and sure. Five passengers set sail that day for a three hour tour. A three hour tour.

The weather started getting rough, the tiny ship was tossed. If not for the courage of the fearless crew, the Minnow would be lost. The Minnow would be lost. The ship set ground on the shore of this uncharted desert isle,
with Gilligan, the Skipper too, the Millionaire
and his wife, the movie star, the Professor
and Mary Ann, here on Gilligan's Isle

Sometimes on "detainee" watch on the Lipan I'd play Glenn Miller for the Haitians, they loved it. Didn't go over so well on drug bust prisoners, when we had some troublesome guests I'd play a couple songs from Glenn Miller and a couple from Steve Miller and tell them the first is what they get if they **** up, the second if they behave.

I have owned two Lazy Boy recliners and one Stratolounger recliner. I'll take the Lazy Boy any day. Nice, comfortable, and well built piece of furniture.

I've never owned a recliner, but when I retire that's going to be the first thing I buy! If I had one now I'd never leave my livingroom.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Lane.

Had some lazy boys, not bad, but for quality and comfort Lane has a much more superior product.

So when I retire I'll get a recliner... and a pool house I've decided. Aaah. I can't wait.

Neither had I...until I sat in my mother-in-laws recliner when we visted, a few years back.

I thought it must be fairly new...turned out it was older than the lazy boy we had at home.

My local newspaper finally ran the wire service story referenced in the original post. I guess they had to wait until they could squeeze it in between NASCAR stories.

Speaking of news stories, anyone see that AP item on the guy up in Minnesota that got a DUI for driving a La-Z-Boy while drunk? Since I can't post the link, if you do a google search for minnesota la-z-boy dui the entire first page is stories about this.
