There was a mass shooting at Fort Hood today. The governor of Texas stated that there were three shooters. The authorities are saying that 12 are dead and another 31 were wounded. No reason for the shooting was given as of this post.

God Bless the victims and their loved ones.

Although Fox is not reporting the name of the shooter that was killed, MSNBC and CNN says it was a Major named Milik Nidal Hasan. No reason was given for the shooting except that maybe he was upset about being deployed to the Middle East.

Hassan was killed by a guard that was armed. The guard was killed while defending others.

It's bad enough that these soldiers have to face the enemy when they are overseas. They shouldn't have to worry about dying while on their home base here in the states.

The Army withheld, until about 9pm EST, that Hassan was in fact apprehended alive and is in stable condition.

I just have to say that I am very sick and saddened by todays turn of events at Fort Hood; both because I am a Texan and currently serving in the military. I study Psychology and it is very rare that any Mass shooter gets apprehended alive. Hopefully we will get more answers about today's tragedy and punish the person(s) responsible.

Perhaps his name explains it all, can't say for sure. I'm trying really hard not to profile but it's getting harder and harder! Frown Thoughts and prayers out to the family and friends.

This is a small part of the statement given by the Arab American Institute regarding the shooting.

"Thousands of Arab Americans and American Muslims serve honorably everyday in all four branches of the U.S. military and in the National Guard," the Arab American Institute said.

I am sending the institute an email to correct their mistake. Feel free to email the president, Mr. James Zogby, at: jzogby@aaiusa.org and make sure that the Arab American Institute knows that there are 5 branches of the United States Military.

Perhaps at times it's best not to have a widespread public identity. Eek

He was born and raised in the U.S., so name alone would not explain anything. I doubt we will ever be able to understand what would drive someone to do something like this.

His sinful nature caused him to kill. The same reason cain killed abel..This is not the first instance of muslims killing american soldiers like this..just the first time inside the US..Remember when the war started, a muslim soldier in kuwait open fire on his fellow soldiers, and rolled a grenade ito his commanders tent..real peaceful they are.. Roll Eyes

If he was, for the sake of argument, Christian, it also would not be the first time one opened fire on his fellow soldiers.

Edited for accuracy.

Stan, UNDERSTANDING TERROR NETWORKS, by Dr. Marc Sageman gives a pretty good analysis on what drives individuals who commit acts such as these.

So what about the other 1.5 BILLION Muslims? Why aren’t they all going crazy and being violent too? Let’s say that there are 500,000 terrorists worldwide. Do the math and figure out how many are not violent. I have a Muslim in my company. Should I get them placed under arrest based upon this animal’s actions?

adherents.com/Religions_By_Adherents.html

And what about nice, peaceful Christians like Fred Phelps of the Westboro Baptist church? He is nearly as vile as this major. Even the name of his web site is terrible!

godhates***s.com (the censored word is f-a-g)(sorry, but that is the name of the website) Frown

What about the Catholic Church that hid the fact that they knew their priests were sexually abusing young children for decades?

boston.com/globe/spotlight/abuse/stories5/043004_fundraising.htm

I don’t understand people that attack billions of people for the actions of a few. Personally I know that some Muslims do abuse their religion to justify terrorist acts just as some Christians abuse their religion to justify their terrible actions. Yes, I believe he did this for religious reasons. But don’t hold every Muslim accountable for the actions of a single person.

That said, this guy said a lot of things in front of people that were violent in nature. His supervisors and co-workers screwed up by refusing to report his anti-American behavior.

I just hope he survives and spends the rest of his life doing hard labor at a maximum security prison. (Do we still do "bread and water?")

Don't execute him; that's what he wanted. It was attempted "Suicide by Cop."

George, I kind of agree with your assessment but I believe the name does not adequately describe this animal. It was a religious terrorist action, plain and simple.

I hope his 72 virgins are all male!

Let us not forget the heroic actions of a civilian contract police officer who stood fast in a tactical situation with the perp charging, with her adrenaline running and despite having been shot 3 times herself, calmly dropped him with a few expertly placed shots to center mass...

Perfect practice makes perfect performance. Well done Sgt!

I wrote the following on another military-related website but thought I'd add it to this post - it has nothing to do with the guy's background or reason for doing what he did - it's only about what'll happen to him.

To the guy asking about what will happen to this nutcase -
He'll be charged and tried under the Uniform Code of Military Justice.
The Fort Hood commander - or the major's senior commander - will convene an Article 32 investigation - means officers will go through everything that happened and make a recommendation to the Convening Authority what charged should be brought. The Judge Advocate General will then make all the appropriate documents and appoint a prosecutor and a defendor along with selecting a panel of senior officers. As this nut jub's a major, the panel will be made up of full colonels and generals. The jerk may hire a civilian lawyer on his own and it'll be interesting to see which civilians clamor to defend him.
If found guilty (and he will be) he will face the death penalty times the number of murder charges he's nailed for. Most likely, he'll be sent to Fort Leavenworth to await execution [they used to hang 'em but I don't know what the current method is]. He'll also get an automatic appeal to the Army's Military Appeals Court and their decision will most likely go to the Supreme Court.
I'll guarantee one thing - it won't take near as long to fry this guy as it would if he was going through the muck of the civilian legal process!!!!!
