NFL Players executive director DeMaurice Smith on Saturday made a move to solidify the union against a bid by conservative talk show radio host Rush Limbaugh as part of a group that aims to purchase the St. Louis Rams.

In an e-mail to the union's executive committee on Saturday specifically addressing Limbaugh's bid, Smith said, "I've spoken to the Commissioner [Roger Goodell] and I understand that this ownership consideration is in the early stages. But sport in America is at its best when it unifies, gives all of us reason to cheer, and when it transcends. Our sport does exactly that when it overcomes division and rejects discrimination and hatred."

Limbaugh and St. Louis Blues owner Dave Checketts are among six potential ownership groups that have discussed buying the Rams. League sources say the current sale price has ranged from $700-to-$750 million but that there did not appear to be an imminent transaction.

On Sunday, Smith briefly elaborated, "This communication is more about what we stand for than the reality of our role in any franchise sale. While it's true the subject matter was related [to Limbaugh's bid], I do understand that the NFL does not present ownership bids to me or the NFLPA. I encourage our players to express their views."

At least seven NFL players have publicly opposed Limbaugh's interest in purchasing the Rams with Checketts. In Smith's communication Saturday with his executive committee, the union leader encouraged players to speak their mind on all matters, including Limbaugh's bid.

"I have asked our players to embrace their roles not only in the game of football but also as players and partners in the business of the NFL," said Smith in the e-mail. "They risk everything to play this game, they understand that risk and they live with that risk and its consequences for the rest of their life. We also know that there is an ugly part of history and we will not risk going backwards, giving up, giving in or lying down to it.

"Our men are strong and proud sons, fathers, spouses and I am proud when they stand up, understand this is their profession and speak with candor and blunt honesty about how they feel."

Limbaugh has expressed a number of controversial racial ideas in the past. For example, he suggested that Gen. Colin Powell supported Barack Obama's presidential candidacy simply because he was black, and he also stated that the media wants black quarterbacks to do well and that Donovan McNabb doesn't deserve much of the credit he has received for the Eagles' success.

Among the half-dozen interested buyers of the Rams, there are strong African-American ownership groups interested in buying the Rams, including businessmen Donald Watkins and Dave Steward.

The league has maintained it does not publicly address potential franchise sales. All transactions, when formally presented after a thorough background check, are decided by the 32 owners by vote.

LOL

First of all, it is absolutely ludicrous that there can be any "union" comprised of multi millionares.

Secondly, if Limbaugh is blackballed (is that a politically correct term?) from buying the Rams because of his political views, that would be like me turning my back on my beloved Steelers because owner Dan Rooney sucked up to Obama to become the American ambassador to Ireland.

Finally, what happened to freedom of speech and expression in this country? The left loves to trot out MacCarthy whenever possible. What is the difference here? Roll Eyes

They play a game for major bucks. I'm sure those that really risk everything for a living would like to be making that kind of money.

Yeah, it's too bad the troops in Afghanistan and Iraq don't make over $250 million for 10 years like Gay-Rod! Mad

Players Union Rejects???

This is ONE e-mail from ONE person. It is meaningless. When I first saw the story, I thought perhaps there was some sort of election held. Or a quick meeting to get the pulse of the "organization".

This is one person... How do these things end up in the news?

Does begging and pleading count as foreplay?

Nothing happened to free speech. Rush exercises it everyday. The players union is exercising their right; just like those that called for boycott of the Dixie Chicks exercised their freedom of expression.

Got to agree with PSimon on this one. Both sides have the right to speak their minds. But contracts are contracts. And if the group containing Rush shows that they can bring the team back and bring the NFL money, the team will be sold to that group. And the players will play for that team. And the checks the players earn will be cashed. And all will be forgotten in two years.

NFL players deserve whatever salary they can negotiate. But, I've gotta say that the idea of an NFL Players Union is pretty funny.

Other unions, not funny. Cartels to monopolize the supply of labor... just plain wrong... even if they didn't use intimidation, violence, and economic disruption.

Take a look what union greed has done to Detroit.

Oh, am I off topic?

How 'bout them Tigers?

Why will people not provide for their family but use their last dime to go sit in the cold rain to watch a game?

I just don't think the league would want to take on that controversy. I would imagine it would be the same if someone like Michael Moore wanted to buy a team.

Off topic a bit, but I heard this joke the other day.

"When Rush has to pay his African-American players the big bucks, will he call it reparations?" Big Grin

Thought it was pretty funny.

Of course, all of these sports figures (owners and players) are entitled to their political beliefs just like the rest of us. Curt Schilling was very public about his support for both President Bush and Senator McCain. It doesn't bother me, as long as they put on a good show on the field.

Who the F--k cares? Really? So Limbaugh wants to buy an NFL team...so what. This will have no impact on politics or the NFL.

What are the "negatives" from this guy buying a team? Other than its him?
