I will have to give credit that in my view the Bush people are doing something half-right. I have been reading of late how illegal immigrants have been arrested, tried, convicted and sent to jail for being illegal. And apparently that is having a little impact on some moving back. Now while I wish they would also throw a few employers in the Hotel de Bars also for hiring them especially after the third or so raid.
This is one issue I wish my fellow progressives would take more seriously it is the illegal’s not those who have waited years performed all the right steps to become valued citizens who are they problem. I will not hold also to the knee-jerk reaction that these are all violent gangsters either I understand many just want a job and a chance or that we are a nation of immigrants I just want it controlled.

AJ, you are giving them too much credit! President Bush is extremely weak on border enforcement and in handling illegal aliens. There is almost no border enforcement and, when agents take necessary actions, they end up in jail (Boarder Agents Ramos & Compia). We have sanctuary cities where lawmakers beg illegal aliens to run to their cities and hide even though those lawmakers are directly violating the law they are sworn to enforce. Companies are not held accountable for knowingly hiring illegal aliens. And when there is a raid, the media hypes up how the police and enforcement agents did a ‘bad’ thing.

Sorry, but enforcing border law seems to be politically incorrect to do and President Bush falls right in line with the ‘progressives’ on this issue.

I agree some enforcement has picked up. 20-something years too late though. TJ is right, This is one area I believe Prez Bush has failed us on. I also agree with you about these employers hiring illegals. If you live in a sanctuary city, the local cops or feds don't seem to be doing anything.

Here in RI the governor issued an exec order stating that government agencies were to use E-Verify to check status of all applicants and the RI State Police were to check status if an arrest is made. He urged all other municipal agencies to do so also. The chief of police of Providence, our largest city, publically announced that they would not check citizenship status of arrestees.
Recently an illegal alien was arrested for raping a 30 year woman. The man had been arrested in Providence three times and was never checked for alien status. ICE had been looking for him for fleeing a deportation order.
In addition to this our General Assembly just killed a bill which would require all employers in the state to use E-Verify for employment applicants.

Anyone out there think that these pols are looking out for us?

E-verify is a joke. It can be defeated ridiculously easy.

The only people that keep claiming that E-Verify is a joke are those that support the illegals. If it is such a joke why are they afraid of it?

Well, I don't support illegals ... I'm just saying a kid can defeat the E-verify system ... certainly a dedicated illegal with half a brain can.

Then we must have illegals around here whose half a brain is right-brain oriented because the advocates for them have been fighting hard not to have E-Verify used

Well, why would you use something that doesn't have full functionality ... and worse, may actually work against average Joe American if, for some reason, it's not completely accurate (as reports coming in are saying). You fly thru the job interview, you're hungry for the spot and ready to start, and E-verify comes back and says, "sorry, you're not who you say you are". A lot of companies drop you on the spot ... there are few who will go to the trouble to wait around for you to fight through the process to get it corrected. Take my word for it ... I've had at least 30 new jobs in the last ten years ... getting ready to start a new one right after July 4th.

"The program has also been called inaccurate, though the error rate, currently around 8 percent, is decreasing, as many of the errors came from changing last names after marriage, or not informing the government they were now citizens.[3]"
That is from Wikipedia. You can assign whatever worth to the statement that you choose.

I'll tell ya' what ... send me your name and SSN, and I'll fix ya' right up, just before your next job change.

Or I guess I could spend $29 and obtain your info on the internet, and go ahead and do it for you. Say, have you ever had a vindictive ex-wife? Or a smart teenager who you've grounded recently?

I'm sorry there are illegals here ... I don't like it either, and they don't understand you at the fast food drive-thru, when you say "no ketchup".

But your paycheck is too important to trust to Uncle Sam ... and 8% of the people is 24 million law abiding Americans, who could be perp-walked out of a job at any time.

Socially,
The true value that I find in your arguement is your cynicism regarding government's ability to produce on its promises. This type of cynicism is healthy. But in this case my cynicism tells me that the problem lies with those in government that choose to divert any efforts at solving the problem of illegals. They talk glibly of "immigration reform" which is simply code for amnesty. Amnesty has been given before with the promise of sealing the borders. Another broken promise.
As far as vindictive ex-wives and grounded teenagers, I suspect that they can screw things up in other aspects as easily if they choose.
I am cynical about government meddling also but I believe that the problem is larger even than we realize and I don't know what we as individuals can do to properly address it. Unfortunately it appears that we need some sort of government intervention.
Perhaps we should have Todd Davis (Life Lock) running the program.

It just amazes me that when we all signed up we had to produce a SSN card, birth certificate, police records etc. Before we even raised our hand, now I have those who tell me that it is flawed? BS meter on high! Problem ok you have 30 days to fix or I fire your arse common sense to me. False ID I think thats ID theft? So what is the problem with jailing them for 6 months or so with a deport order. My view is that would kill the chance for a try at legal immigration and thefore they can pack bags to Canada, or where ever they came from.

To get a job, all you need to produce is a passport. Nearly all of my jobs, I fax a copy of my passport to my employer. Easy to be duplicitous. Even a stolen passport handed to a busy HR "to make copies" would likely pass muster, if a picture were carefully glued in. Virtually every one I've handed in was with five or ten others "for copying". And of course, if you have a passport, no SSN is listed, and no SSN card is shown. So as long as the SSN you provide matches the name on the passport, you're good to go.

They steal the SS number. I've not buy anthing on line because they want your SS number. I don't give it out. On the other hand, when I joined the Police as a volunteer I had to take a ten print finger printing, and they asked me about my SS number. It's safe with the cops. When the new station opens we all have to have cards like credit cards to get into the station. The cops have been shot at, the person jumps the desk and I could go on and on. the front desk has a metal piece in the middle of two pieces of wood. An officer got shot through the wood.

If George Bush and/or the Congress are doing very little to stop the flow of illegal immigrants into this country, it's because their corporate paymasters WANT the illegals here, to drive down the cost of labor. Arresting the immigrants themselves does no more good than arresting street level drug dealers. As long as campaign contributors want the drugs AND the illegal immigrants here, then here they will stay.

Take corporate money out of politics, let the people make the laws, and we can finally actually solve these problems.
