does the AFA do like a foreign exchange program type deal? by this i mean, does the AFA work together with friendly countries and take in some of thier soldiers and give them a four year education and then send them back?
yeah i looked there before i posted and couldnt find the information i was lookin for..
i have a friend from another country (would rather not say which) but it is us ally, but not a big military country, and he just joined their air force, and is going to be in pilot training, but a degree is not required for pilot training in that countries air force, and he heard from the rumor mill that he and some others may be going to the academy. im guessing confirmation of this by the academy my be a violation of OPSEC, and thats why its not on the site, or it may in fact just be a rumor... but im leaning more towards OPSEC violation because this country is know to have trained with the US army and armies of other military strong countries
We do foreign exchange programs. There are, I believe, about 60 foreign cadets here. It is financed by the host country. We just had a week long tour for about 50 cadets and officers from about 15-20 countries, as well. www.academyadmissions.com should have a note about foreign exchange programs somewhere. It might be in the eligibility or FAQ section.
Although there are some basic requirements set by the US, the foreign personnel are chosen by their home country. They don't apply to the AFA directly, the government of that country sends them if they have a slot (sts) and a viable/qualified candidate. As far as finding out if that country has a slot, I have no idea where to start, I imagine his supervisor is a good place.
Confirmation of Foreign Exchange programs are not violations of OPSEC. Each of the five service academies provide slots for foreign service applicants. They are chosen by their countries. I roomed with a guy from Honduras, had friends from Lithuania, Latvia, St. Lucia and of course my friend from Honduras. It is an honor to be selected from those countries and we enjoyed their prospective and friendship. I wouldn't think it's any different at the Air Force Academy.
Tiny & Sand are correct... these programs build an esprit de corps that may serve us (USA) well down the road in our careers. My info is dated but my son went from USAFA for a semester to Germany years ago. A few of their Luftwafee (sp) cadets went to USAFA for a semester or for 4 years. The country will send only their best (or best connected!! lol)cadets. Tell him to get educated on the process. It will serve him and us well.
