I am seriously considering applying for this duty buy would like someone to give me the inside story as to what life is TRULY like. I have been in for 10 yrs and am a Tech, so I do know about all the fluff! Give me the low down!!!! I look forward to hearing what your experiences were/are like.
Well, I can give you a cadet's perspective (take it for what it's worth).
AMTs usually work with one major and another TSgt or MSgt within a cadet squadron. They serve a support/admin/mentoring role. They work a wide variety of issues, such as processing a host of administrative details, supervising cadet training, mentoring the cadets in leadership roles, resolving disciplinary issues, and more.
Quite a bit depends on the squadron one is assigned to. Some of the AOCs (major in charge of the squadron) delegate most of the tasks to the cadet leadership, under the AOC's and AMTs' supervision. Others take a very hands-on approach. Sometimes it winds up where the AOC and AMTs take on the majority of the squadron leadership functions (which is not quite how the system is intended to work).
If you are a "people person," it can be a very good job. There are many opportunities for mentoring cadets.
Colorado Springs is a great place, in my opinion. It is a fairly large city, with around 300k in the area. There are an enormous amount of outdoor activities available, being at the base of the Rockies. The winters are pretty long, as a result of the geography, and the weather is constantly changing.
If you want a change from your current AFSC this is it. You may feel like you're working in a frat house which is mostly true. However, take what cadets do in-stride. They live in a pressure cooker everyday so goofing off is normal. Also, how AMT's treat cadets greatley effects thier prospective of the enlisted force. Be a D!@# and cadets will most likely not be friendly to other enlisted as cadets and even officers. It's a great oppurtunity to lead.
