Hey everyone,
I'm highly interested in joining the Air Force and am looking for a good plan to finish out high school with a good resume to submit to the academy. I've just started my second semester of sophomore year and have been doing well to get into college, but it wasn't until recently, during the summer, that I really decided I wanted to join the Air Force. I've always known I wanted to be a pilot, I just wasn't sure which way to steer. So I could have done more to make my resume look better for the academy, but fortunately I've still got some time. Last year I had I think between a 3.7 and 3.83 or something like that with unfortunately only 1 advance class which was math although that class was 2 years ahead of my classmates, there have just been restructurings going on so I'm not sure how that class was classified. I would have been in advance science also but a stupid decision I made in middle school prevented me from doing that, ridiculously horrible teacher caused me to drop it but that's another story Next year I will stay in my advance classes and pick up any I can. I was also considering joining student government for leadership and maybe another club or two. I only play one sport unfortunately, lacrosse, but I could pick up some more. I'm not a big sports guy but I am in shape. I run under a 6 minute mile, I don't know what my times are anymore though and I can improve that when I work out again during the lacrosse season. I'll time myself sometime to get an exact time. So now I guess I'm to my question part; what should I do, what organizations should I join to produce the highest chances of acceptance? I forgot to mention, I don't have any volunteer hours yet but will defiantly be racking them up when I get my license in a month. Also, does it help any to have a private pilot license? I will be getting mine when I turn also. Okay, sorry for the novel but any help would be greatly appreciated; I really want to make this. One last thing, I forgot to mention my weakness in school is English class, I despise grammar (only the written stuff, I don't care to know how to be able to identify a compound-complex sentence with adverbs and all that other mumbo jumbo. My spoken grammar is fine though.) but I suppose I could try really hard and pick up and advance there (I'm hoping AFA doesn't care to much about that) and also, will multiple gym classes do anything, I kind of doubt it though? Okay, thanks again! -Darryl P.S. Also the very last thing I forgot to mention, I highly doubt this too but idk, it may help: my uncle is a retired USAF colonel if letters of recommendation from people like this help?.?.? |

Try to maintain at least a 3.8 in those advanced classes. The academy looks for leadership and dedication in activities. So, go for things that interest you. Yes, having a pilot license helps, but it is not a massive thing. Most cadets do not have pilot licenses. Your uncle's letter might be useful, if he knows you well, and can compare your qualities with qualities he saw in successful officers. The whole rank thing isn't an advantage.
Look at the information at www.academyadmissions.com for the official information. |

Know there are multiple routes to becoming an AF pilot as well. If you are serious about becoming an AF pilot, have a plan, and have a back up plan. If you didn't get into the academy, your dreams are not shattered. Not that I'm saying don't worry about it and slack off, just make sure you know what you want to do if the academy doesn't work out for whatever reason.

Ok, thank you both; I'll keep both suggestions in mind.
