Sorry let me be more clear: I am 16 about to start the 12th grade in September home schooling, I went to private school in 5th, 8th, and 11th grade partially public school in 7th, I have good grades, almost 4.0 GPA-The only thing I am worried about are my extracurricular activities- I take karate and brazillian ju jitsu, I like MMA, but I am not in any kind of organized sport- I seriously want to get appointed, and know I can handle it. I don't have any letters of recommendation at the moment but I should be able to get some soon... How much of a chance do I have to get in would you think? I know extracurricular activities is a big part. Also, should I try to apply right away? Thanks for helping -USAVex

Yes, apply right away. You are a little behind, so you need to send in your applications for congressional nominations immediately. Also, contact your ALO (liason officer who will help with the process). You can call admssions to find out who your ALO is. www.academyadmissions.com has the relevant information. I can't really tell you your chances, but a near 4.0 is a good starting point. Academics make up 60% of the admissions score. Since you are in karate and ju jitsu, you might have athletics covered. Another point the academy wants to see is leadership.

I appreciate it raimius, gave me more confidence. I'll send the nomination requests right away, heres a question though, do I only need 1 congressional nomination? Whats the rate at a first time nomination? Never sent a letter like thisSmile Also why should you start this in your junior year-website says you have to be 17 and below 23- say someone wanted to start after they graduated, would that be possible or should you do this in your junior/senior year? Asking just so I don't screw up haha. Thanks!

There is a timeline at academyadmissions that explains the required deadlines.
You only need 1 congressional nomination, however it is to your advantage to get multiples (the academy can choose to appoint you in more ways, thus making it more likely). They advise candidates to start during their junior year so they have enough time to complete all applications well before the deadlines (the longer you wait, the less your chances, due to rolling admissions).
You need to contact your representative and senators' offices to find out when their deadlines are, because those will be the closest.
