In the Helmsman it says you are permited to bring Underpants(white)(6-10 pairs) does it matter what kind like briefs, boxer briefs as long as they are white? And if you do not bring any what do they give you?

To be safe, completely white briefs or completely white boxers. Take your pick.

As far as I remember they do not issue any underwear, but you do get an oppourtunity to buy them if needed at the exchange. Save yourself the hassle and bring them with you.

If you do not bring any they will give you hanes underware as part of your seabag from the udc. If the underwear you bring is not completely white you are not going to be able to keep it and will end up in your bag packed in SEXTON hall for 7 weeks. I know the Helsman says you can bring all this stuff underwear, white shirts (v.necks) a small toiletries bag and stuff like that, all that stuff is given to you by the coast guard (and then you pay it back in installments).

I took all three types. Briefs, Boxers and BoxerBriefs. I figured out on some days one type would work better than others (the issue of support).

Whatever is white, makes you comfortable and supports you in the HEAT!! As I recall (and I went through Cape May over 22 years ago) it was 98F in the *****ing shade there. You probably want to stay away from thongs. Good luck in your new career.

Hahah! My recruiter told me only briefs! But I have never worn briefs in my life, and still refuse to wear them, so I did bring them, but I also brought a bunch of boxer briefs that I ended up wearing. There were people who wore boxers also, but just as long as it's white!

I remember when I went thru boot in Aug of 1979 at Alameda. We were issued boxers and not allowed to use the briefs we brought, in fact I don't remember them letting us keep anything we brought.

I was just packing my bag for Cape May on Tuesday and I realized that no where in the Helmsman does it mention anything about socks. I am probably going to go out and look for about 6-10 all white socks that cover my ankle. Am I right to assume that is what they are looking for?

That might work for your PT time, but most of the time you will be wearing black boot socks that will be provided to you in your seabag issue. They may even provide the white PT socks, but it's been over 9 years since I went through so I honestly don't remember.

Don't bring socks! You will be issued athletic socks, boot socks, and dress socks.
