1. Did you lose weight? If so, how much? Yes. I got weighed in when I got there at 187. As of tonight(22dec) I am 168. 2. Any recruits need to stay behind a week or so? My company lost almost 30 recruits. Mostly for dumb stuff. Not knowing the required knowledge, not paying attention to detail stuff like that. 3. Tougher mentally or physically? It's both. It really is hard to put a finger on which was harder because its different for everyone. 4. And where will you be heading in about 10 days? Again, Congrats and Good Luck!! Im heading to STA Eatons Neck NY
I was curious to know how you studied and memorized the 11 general orders and how knowing them helped. I hear knowing them will defenitely help but how and why? thanks

It definitely does help to have them memorized. Learn them before you leave because there is stuff you will have to memorize once your there and it can be overwhelming. All I did was repeat them over and over again whenever I had free time. It took me a few days to get it. Just make sure you know them word for word because it can be a reversion for not knowing required knowledge.
What did you do to prepare (physically) for boot camp and how fit were you before going? Then my real question is how difficult were the physical aspects for you during. Although the physical does not aid with the mental but how can one really prepare for mental strain unless experiencing it?

I was in decent shape before I left. Get used to doing lots and lots of push ups, squats, flutter kicks, and crunches. We also ran 4 times a week. Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and an off base run on Sunday. I would suggest doing push ups and sit ups atleast twice a day. Also try and run a few times a week so you don't fall behind. There really is no way to prepare someone for the mental aspect of bootcamp. Everyone takes it differently. Just remember the main goal is to give you the confidence and sense of urgency needed in a life saving service like the coast guard.

Same old POA. I cant tell you how man hours is spent locked in POA staring off into the galley freezing my butt off waiting for my shipmates to finish their 4th PP&J. Good times.
CHIEF: The POA has changed slightly in regards to the descriptive they need to memorize. I'll send you the latest via e-mail. The POA on Page-37 of the Helmsman is good guidance to get them started.
Rush221: I think your post on what to expect was well put. Sailors have to have a thick skin when showing up. NOTHING can prepare them for the mental aspect ... *grin*
-about the 11-General Orders question- The 11-General Orders are what every service member lives by. They are a set of rules that guide all watchstanders in the execution of their duties. This is not just some convoluted CG literature. All the service memorize the 11-General Orders and LIVE BY THEM.
Thanks Chief Starace. The day you came up to me in the galley by the trash barrels asking me to point out the recruit that was a jerk in the harbor view was pretty scary. I was white knuckling my tray as you walked over to me. I though I was going to get jacked up for something. haha.
How much sleep did you get every night? Were you ever affected by sleep deprivation? This is my biggest concern. I often get confused or disoriented when I wake up, and if I didn't get enough sleep I won't be able to focus at all throughout the day. I just hope I can function enough to make it through. Did you make any friends in boot camp?
Hey Rush, congrats on successfully completing boot camp! I can't wait to go, I'm supposed to be going on January 15, 2008; however, I'm really concerned because my recruiter has not contacted me yet to sign my papers. I call almost everyday, except I left her alone this weekend because of the holidays, but I'll probably call her again tomorrow! She said she's got a spot reserved for me at boot and for A school, but she hasn't called me in to sign my papers and I'm really concerned I won't be going. January 15th is right around the corner in 3 weeks! Any insight on what I should do? Should I speak with the chief? I have just been so excited I just don't want to let myself down because my recruiter doesn't give me my papers to sign! Thanks everyone, and again, congrats Rush!

Our sleep schedule was this. If we went to bed at 2130 we woke up at 0530. If we went to bed at 2200 we woke up at 0600. So there was always enough time to sleep. And believe me when those lights come on and they start yelling, there is no confusion on what you need to do. Once watches start you'll loose about 2 hours of sleep every night you have watch. Just don't get double watches. DOH! And as for making friends. After about 2 days everyone one knows everything about everyone of their shipmates. You all become very close.

Well I know nothing about recruiting so I don't want to make any assumptions or anything. My recruiter was awesome, so I never had to worry about anything like that. Sorry.
I had a small question, didn't want to make a whole thread for it, so: I read that I can take a "religious reference book" to boot camp. I was wondering if this basically just includes the bible and christian texts, or if other books would be permitted (IE, philosophy that does not associate itself with a specific religious group)

If it's "a" book and not a complete volume and you use it in your religion, then it should be fine. You don't have alot of room(storage) at Cape May. CPO Kalbach
