I am interested in the Select Reserve Direct Commission. So far I have not been able to get an answer for the question if military credits are accepted towards the 60 credit hours required.
My CGI Unofficial Student Transcript says I have 54 credits as per my last assessment. I have also attended Carteret Community College and have earned 21 credits. With these combined I am at 75 credits. Am I eligible with these or do the Coast Guard credits not count because it is not a degree-granting college?

Select Reserve Direct Commission

This program applies to people who have degrees in a field where the Coast Guard needs officers. If you have not completed a degree in a particular field it will definately hurt your chances(if you have one) to get in. I would suggest finishing up your degree and going from there. Get with your unit ESO and he/she will hook you up with a thourogh assessment and point you in the right direction to get your degree finished through distance learning or another program. And yes your military credits will count(some wont)towards your degree.

Education: Baccalaureate or higher degree or if you are currently an E5 in the Coast Guard or Coast Guard Reserves, 60 semester hours at a degree granting college or university. (Cumulative GPA 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale.)

If you meet the E-5 requirement, you would need to take your Coast Guard credits to a degree granting college to get them transfered to see where you are at officially with the college as far as credits go. CPO Kalbach

Find an Education Office at any military facility.

Look in the SOC Guide (Servicemember's Opportunity Colleges) It has a list of institutions that accept military credit "recommendations" from the ACE guide (your transcript from the CG uses the ACE guide). It will help you see what is accepted by who/whom. It also lists their acceptance for CLEP and DANTES tests. You might find something close by.

If you are unable to complete a degree locally, There are the four programs that will transfer in credit from any "regionally accredited" schools; Excelsior in NY, Univ. of Phoenix, AZ, Charter Oak State in CT, and Thomas Edison State in NJ.

Remember, your transfer credits are like puzzle pieces. You will have some duplicate pieces, especially from the military. Fulling in the blanks is pretty easy in the lower level requirements. Completing upper level credits in a concentration is a lot harder.

Good luck!
